Holidays to Torre del Mar put you on Spain’s sunny southern coast, where you’ll find a Blue Flag beach, a waterpark and lots of bars and eateries.
Southern Spanish charm
Torre del Mar – Spanish for tower of the sea – is easy to spot on the map. It’s on the much-loved southern coast, in the Andalusia region. This part of the country’s known for its historic architecture – like Moorish castles – and seafood-first dishes like pescado frito, which literally translates to fried fish. Malaga is your nearest big-name city – it’s around a 30-minute drive away from town, so daytrips to the Picasso Museum and Alcazaba, an 11th-century fortress, are on the cards.
A+ for authenticity
Things are pretty traditional in the town itself. The promenade, or Paseo Maritimo de Poniente as the locals call it, is one of the best assets. All three kilometres of this seaside path is dotted with cafés, cocktail bars, pubs and restaurants serving Andalusian classics, like paella and sangria. And that’s just part of the reason that Torre del Mar still has an authentic Spanish feel – a lighthouse that dates back to the 1800s and a handful of white churches add to the picture.
Sunloungers and slides
We couldn’t talk about this place without giving a shoutout to its beach, Playa del Torre del Mar. It’s got a big stretch of sand leading you into the Med, which spans out so far onto the horizon that it blends with the sky on a clear day. It’s rarely crowded here, so there’s no need to worry about finding a space to lay out your towel. If you’re the adventurous type, there are also watersports on offer. And adrenaline junkies can easily plan a day or two at a waterpark, since the nearest one’s just a 15-minute walk away.
