Holidays to San Fernando are all about chilled-out beach days and daytrips to bustling Andalusian cities.
Top-tier beach days
There are plenty of beaches to shout about in this part of Andalusia, and Playa de Camposoto and Playa del Castillo are two of the top picks in San Fernando. Playa de Camposoto's a huge sandy swathe that rolls out along five-and-a-half miles of coastline, ticking the Blue Flag box as it goes. The waters are clear with a few waves, making it a popular spot for surfers, and there are lots of sand dunes nearby. Playa del Castillo’s slightly smaller, but it also has the Blue Flag seal of approval. Its name translates to 'Castle Beach', as Sohail Castle’s right next to it.
At one with nature
The Parque Natural Bahía de Cádiz, also known as the Natural Park of the Bay of Cadiz, is a huge nature reserve that's brimming with wildlife, both in the water and on land. The area's made up of all kinds of habitats, from lagoons and marshes to dunes and pine forests, making it a great place for an afternoon walk that’s a little out of the ordinary. Birdwatchers – you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for migrating birds like flamingos and herons, or if you're more interested in fish, there are plenty darting about in the waters, too. You can rent a canoe, which gives you a great chance to see them up close.
Take a daytrip
You’ll lose count of the number of places to visit when you’re staying in Costa de la Luz. You can easily head out to Cadiz – a lively city that juts out into the sea – from San Fernando. It takes about 20 minutes in a cab. There are plenty of shops to browse here, along with cathedrals and historical landmarks like the Torre Tavira. If you want to venture a little further, you could set an early alarm and take a daytrip to Seville. This place is about an hour and a half’s drive away, and it’s the capital of Andalusia. You could spend hours simply wandering the streets here, soaking it all in – it’s bursting with intricate architecture, traditional tapas bars and pretty plazas.
