Moussata holidays
Jump to sections
Holidays to Moussata take you to the south of Kefalonia, to a village sandwiched between the mountains and the sea.
Lazy beach days
Peaceful afternoons on honey-hued sands are on the cards over the summer months in Moussata. The nearest sandy spot is Trapezaki Beach – you’ll see clear, turquoise waves in one direction, and a backdrop of rolling mountains in the other. From the village, it’s about five minutes’ drive, or just under half an hour’s walk, towards the shore. It’s quite a small bay, but there’s plenty of space to set up camp for a day of sunbathing, and there are a few tavernas and bars and close by, too. If snorkelling’s your thing, you’ll find the waters are shallow and clear, so keep your eyes peeled for flurries of fish swimming among the rocks.
Hillside views
The little village of Moussata is perched on a hillside, keeping lookout over the shoreline of southern Kefalonia. From such a height, the views are top-tier – you'll spy the Ionian Sea’s waves glinting in the sun, and emerald-green landscapes blanketing the island. When you wander around, you’ll pass smooth stone buildings decorated with pretty balconies and traditional shutter blinds, nestled among clusters of bushes and olive trees. Among them, there’s a traditional bakery serving fresh pastries and hot drinks – Greek delicacies like bougatsa and baklava are on our list of must-tries.
City life in Argostoli
The capital city of Kefalonia is around 20 minutes’ cab ride away from Moussata, making it easy to spend a day there. You’ll find plenty of pretty scenes picked straight from a postcard, from a palm-tree-lined harbour to vibrant cobbled streets. The bay in Argostoli is huge, and there’s a bridge spanning from one side to the other – it's almost half a mile long, to give you an idea of the size. If you’re a culture buff, you’ve got a couple of libraries and museums to browse, and you could catch a show at Kefalos Theater – one of the oldest and largest theatres in Greece. On the other hand, if you’d rather spend the day hopping between bars and restaurants and taking some photos, there are plenty of eateries in the city, along with a huge ‘I love Kefalonia’ sign you can pose for a selfie with.
A slice of history
The Agios Georgios – AKA the Castle of Kefalonia – is just over 10-minutes’ drive from Moussata. Dating back over 800 years, it’s a big piece of the island’s history. It's perched on a hilltop, and many people pay the entry fee of a few euros for the widescreen views alone, so be sure to bring your camera along. From certain points of the castle, you can see the capital city of Argostoli, and right out to sea – traditionally, its watchtowers were used to look out for danger on the water. Once you’ve wandered the castle ruins, there’s a small village next-door with a family-run restaurant and a church – perfect for a pitstop.
