Cayo is set within the Buenavista Biosphere Reserve, home to the world’s second largest barrier reef after Australia. The coral shelf teems with an eye-popping 6,500 underwater species – including tropical fish, two-metre barracuda, crustaceans and sea turtles. With 24 established dive sites, there are caves, tunnels and shipwrecks for experienced divers, but also plenty of snorkelling spots for beginners’ exploration.
The gentle waters lapping Cayo’s eight miles of shoreline were made for watersports, and at our adults-only Royalton Cayo Santa Maria, things like kayaking and windsurfing are included in your rate. If you're feeling more ambitious, you can up the pace by renting a jet ski, or going kitesurfing or paragliding.
Cayo is a birdwatcher’s paradise, and you might spot candy pink-coloured flamingos, hawks, pelicans and Cuba’s national bird, the red, white and blue tocororo – which handily matches the national flag. Blue lizards and iguanas are another common sighting.
Just moments from our Iberostar Ensenachos hotel, you’ll find a dolphinarium where you can jump in the water and cuddle up to bottle-nose beauties, or watch them perform stunts during a 20-minute show. There’s also a separate sea lion performance.
After a day on the sun lounger, nothing beats a romantic sunset cruise around Cayo’s sheltered lagoon. Catamaran excursions typically include transfers from your hotel to the marina, an open bar, salsa dancing on deck and an exotic lobster dinner.
The adults-only is just moments away from one of the most beautiful beaches in Cuba and also has two outdoor pools.
is pushed up against one of Cayo Santa Maria’s sandy beaches, and comes with eight restaurants and nine bars.
