What's ESTA?
Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is a required registration for travellers visiting the USA under the Visa Waiver Programme. For more detailed information, visit the US Embassy website.
How to apply for ESTA
Apply online through the official ESTA application website.
- Current fee: $21 per application (new or renewal)
- From 30th September 2025: $40 per application (new or renewal -price increase)
- Apply at least 72 hours before departure
- Valid for up to two years or until your passport expires (whichever comes first)
Your ESTA remains valid for multiple USA trips, but you’ll need to update your travel dates and accommodation address for each visit.
Note: Some travellers may not qualify for the Visa Waiver programme (ESTA). This includes people with certain criminal records or those who have visited specific countries – for example, if you’ve visited Cuba on or after 1st January 2021. You may need to apply for a visa instead. This requires more time to process. For the latest advice and costs, check the US Customs and Border Protection website or the UK Government's USA travel advice page.
Important information about ESTA
Without an approved ESTA before travel, you may be denied boarding or entry to the USA. However, having an approved ESTA for visa doesn’t guarantee entry – immigration officials make the final decision upon arrival.
