What's ESTA?
Electronic System for Travel Authorization - or ESTA - is something you need to register for if you're travelling to the USA under the Visa Waiver Programme. For more information, visit the US Embassy website.
ESTA is separate to API, so you'll need to complete both of these requirements before you go.
How to apply for ESTA
Visit the ESTA website to apply online. You'll need to pay $21 for each new or renewed ESTA application and you must apply a minimum of 72 hours before you're due to go.
ESTA is valid for up to 2 years after you've applied or until your passport runs out - whichever comes first. It's also valid if you're travelling to the USA more than once, but you'll need to amend details like your date of travel and the address you're staying at.
In some cases, you may not be eligible to participate in the Visa Wavier Program (ESTA) if you’ve visited certain countries, for example Cuba, in the past and would need to apply for a visa and you’ll need to allow more time for this. For more information go to: Official ESTA Application Website, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (dhs.gov) and also the FCDO for the latest advice and costs: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/usa/entry-requirements
Important information about ESTA
If you don't apply for ESTA before you go, you might not be able to board the plane, or you may be delayed or refused entry when you get to the USA. However, applying for ESTA, having a visa or meeting the requirements of travelling under the Visa Waiver Programme doesn't guarantee you entry to the USA - immigration officials have the final say on this when you arrive.
