Combine cobbled streets and seafood restaurants with tree-backed beaches and historical sights on holidays to Preveza.

Town as old as time

Preveza’s a port town where you can take things at your own pace. It’s plotted at the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf in western Greece, and it was built on an ancient town called Vereniki in the late 11th century. These days, you can stroll along the harbour where boats bob about in the sea, or meander through the old town’s maze of cobbled streets past Venetian mansions, cosy coffee shops and tavernas that major in seafood.

Forest-backed beaches

If you’re after a bit of vitamin sea, you only need to drive 10 minutes to find a tree-lined coastline. A couple of beaches worth a mention are Monolithi – this sandy bay stretches out for 22 kilometres, so you’re not short of space to lay out your towel. The second is Kyani Akti, which serves up clear shallow waters, and tall eucalyptus trees cast shady spots on the sand.

A city from the past

History buffs are in for a treat here, too. Just on the outskirts of the town – about a 30-minute drive away – is the Ancient City of Nikopolis. The archaeological site was founded by Roman emperor Octavian to mark the victory against Antony and Cleopatra. When you enter, you’ll see a Byzantine church, and as you delve in further you’ll uncover Roman walls, a stadium and two theatres. You can see a lot of it for free by the roadside, but if you want a bit more background, you can head into the museum.
