A city from the past

History buffs are in for a treat here, too. Just on the outskirts of the town – about a 30-minute drive away – is the Ancient City of Nikopolis. The archaeological site was founded by Roman emperor Octavian to mark the victory against Antony and Cleopatra. When you enter, you’ll see a Byzantine church, and as you delve in further you’ll uncover Roman walls, a stadium and two theatres. You can see a lot of it for free by the roadside, but if you want a bit more background, you can head into the museum.
