Spend December 25th in Iceland if you really want to up your chances of seeing some snow on the ground during the Christmas holidays. You’ll be staying in capital city Reykavik, which flaunts stylish cocktail bars and quirky museums. And, during the Christmas holidays, the city goes all out – expect ice skating rinks and Christmas markets, with the action kicking off at the lighting of the Oslo Christmas tree at the start of December.
You’ll get really up close and personal with the white stuff on our excursions during the festive period – and there are two included in the price of your trip. Our Golden Circle Tour takes you on a 300-kilometre circuit that includes Thingvellir National Park, the Gullfoss waterfall, and the Strokkur geyser. The second excursion drives you out into the Icelandic wilderness to try and spot the iconic northern lights. And there are loads more to choose from, including whale watching, and a guided tour of glacier. Plus, make sure you visit the thermal waters of the Blue Lagoon, where you can warm up at the swim-up bar.
For a really festive Christmas, head to Finnish Lapland. Because of its position inside the Arctic Circle, you’re almost guarenteed snow here. Stay in capital Rovaniemi to experience the level of history and culture you’d get in any European city – plus, it’s also known as the official home of Santa Claus. The lively village of Levi puts you close to the ski resorts, and you can stay in a snow-covered log cabin. So, heading out into the forest to try out winter sports like snowmobiling and skiing is easy. You can spot the northern lights in Lapland, too.
Lapland really delivers if you’re trying to keep kids happy at Christmas. You’ll be greeted at the airport by Santa’s elves, will get to have a go at tobbogan riding, and try your hand at decorating cookies and making Christmas ornaments. Plus, little ones can meet the man of the hour himself. For even more festive fun, try our Elf Adventure excursion, where kids get to sing Christmas songs, make handicrafts with Mrs Claus, and nibble on toasted marshmellows with the elves.
