Also known as The Path of the Gods, this trail along the Amalfi Coast flaunts standout views of the Med and the nearby island of Capri. Taking about three hours to complete, it’s a great walk for those who want to stretch their legs in the sun. Descend the 300 steps that lead to the secluded Arienzo beach, and then cool off with a swim or drink at the beach bar. Views at beach-level are just as impressive, whether you’re out at sea looking up at the sweeping cliffs dotted with whitewashed walls, or watching the boats from the pebbles.
National parks are big business in Croatia – tourists can choose from eight across the country. Paklenica has over 150 kilometres of hiking trails, most of it leading you through lush pine forest and past small waterfalls. There are a range of different difficulty levels to cater to all walking abilities, so you don’t need to be a seasoned hiker to enjoy the natural beauty. One of the most popular hikes leads you to Manita Peć Cave, and only takes about two hours to complete. Make sure to check the opening hours of the cave before you make your way up the 450 metre ascent.
The Inca Trail is one of the most famous hikes in the world, and leads those who are brave enough to try it – and complete the four day trek successfully – to Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Shrouded in mystery and over 550 years old, it’s a tourist hotspot, especially in July and August. Due to the amount of visitors the trails receive, only 200 people a day can make the journey to limit erosion, so make sure to book ahead.
Montenegro’s Ladder of Kotor isn’t for the faint-hearted. Following an old military trail, hikers make their way up a steep incline up into the mountains. But the effort is worth it – stop to catch your breath at the Chapel of St Ivan on your way up, and enjoy the views. Further up is the castle of San Giovanni, which offers a spectacular sunset for those who persevere. It only takes about 30 minutes to get back to town from here, so it’s a great way to finish your hike.
A five-minute walk from the main beach at Petrovac in Montenegro, the W Grand is a small, friendly family option with a children's playground and a spa to soothe mum and dad.
The adults-only TUI SENSIMAR Adriatic Beach is set at the foot of a pine-covered mountain, on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast.
Set on a cliff that nosedives into the sea, the whitewashed Hotel Belvedere makes for quite a sight. And the views of the Amalfi Coast are equally arresting.
