Island boat trips and a culture-filled capital are lined up in Malta.
Where we sail in Malta
Malta’s cruise port is nudged up beside the wafer-coloured buildings of the capital, Valletta. That puts architectural gems like the Grandmaster’s Palace and Castille Palace right on your doorstep. If history’s not your bag, the pretty Upper Barrakka Gardens deliver top-drawer views of the harbour. And because it's the smallest capital in Europe, it's easy to tick off the city's best bits in a single swoop. For the hottest weather, aim to visit between June and September, where temperatures nudge the high 20s and there’s hardly any rain.
Island neighbours
Exploring Malta’s neighbours is a breeze – you can reach the inter-island ferry terminal in 45 minutes by car from Valletta. Hop aboard, and the islands of Comino and Gozo come into play. See the checkerboard-style salt pans on Gozo, and marvel at the island’s long-standing Megalithic temples. Comino’s Blue Lagoon, meanwhile, has striking turquoise waters that look like they’re on loan from the Maldives. The beaches are on a par with those on the main island, and scuba diving and snorkelling are among the watersports favourites.
