Our cruises to Albania major in historic landmarks and biscuit-coloured beaches.
A stopover in Albania’s perfect if you love pairing centuries-old architecture with tension-releasing days by the beach. Our cruises to Albania dock in Sarande, a charming town anchored into a pretty horseshoe-shaped bay. It’s home to the rocky remains of a 5th-centruy synagogue, as well as a 16th-century semi-ruined castle that sits above the town on an olive-tree-sprinkled hilltop. Sarande’s beaches are relatively quiet, with shortbread-coloured sand that cosies up to water the blue-green shade of a precious stone. Make time to walk along the promenade that snakes alongside the beach – this walkway’s decorated with palm trees and ice-cream carts.
Albania’s got a typical Mediterranean climate. We call here in April, an ideal time to explore because it’s more pleasant to walk around – especially if you want to see some of the town’s tourist hotspots. Like Lekuresi Castle, which is a bit of hike to get to, but with huge rewards at the end. Once a citadel and today a semi-ruin, this landmark’s worth the steep climb for panoramic views of Corfu and the Greek border.
Settled on the edge of the Albanian Riviera, Saranda’s sandwiched between the Ionian Sea and a hilly landscape carpeted in olive groves. The town sits in a horseshoe-shaped bay, edged with marshmallow-white beaches. History’s a big hook here – there are the ruins of a 5 th -century synagogue in the centre and a 16 th -century castle overlooking the town.
TUI River Cruises tick off everything from big-name cities like Budapest and Vienna to barely-trodden bankside beauties, like Cochem and Durnstein – via iconic waterways including the Rhine and Danube. Best of all? Flights, transfers and meals with drinks are all included.
