Michamvi Kae holidays

Michamvi Kae, Zanzibar

Holidays to Michamvi Kae promise barefoot beach strolls, memorable sunsets, and chilled-out bars right on the sand.

Off-radar Zanzibar

Michamvi Kae is a barely-there village on Zanzibar’s Michamvi Peninsula. It’s the smaller, quieter little sister to Pingwe, with just a fistful of thatched bungalows and hotels to its name. The road runs out before you reach the coast, with a rocky beach track to take you the rest of the way – so you really feel like Robinson Crusoe by the time you arrive on the sand. But the journey there is worth it once you cast your eyes on this chilled-out corner of the tropics.

Barefoot bliss

Charge up your camera, because this spot is a sight for the snap-happy. The long ribbon of sand is one of the only places you can see the sunset on Zanzibar’s east coast, and there’s a sprinkling of beach bars primed for the show. The beach itself has got all the hallmarks of paradise – icing-sugar sand, coconut-heavy palm trees, and a sea the colour of a robin’s egg. At low tide, it’s like a giant paddling pool, with knee-height water for wading in, while high tide brings the chance to swim or snorkel.

Nature’s playground

This place is all about flaking out on the sand and forgetting what day it is – but when you do feel like getting out and about, snorkelling tours to the Blue Lagoon are only five minutes away. The reef here is a hotbed for starfish, so keep your eyes peeled for their colourful outline on the sea floor. For a daytrip on dry land, Jozani Forest is only half an hour away in the car. Here, Zanzibar’s prized National Park is home to hundreds of red colobus monkeys, butterflies, and exotic birds.
