Speyer City Tour
Calling all history fans – this tour takes you to one of Germany’s oldest towns. Founded by the Romans, Speyer dates back to around 10BC. After a 45-minute bus journey from Mannheim, you’ll kick things off with a two-hour walking tour. The headline sight here is the UNESCO-ticked cathedral. It’s the oldest Romanesque cathedral in Germany – of the three still standing – and was the burial place of German emperors for almost 300 years. From above, it’s laid out in the shape of a Latin cross. And just outside its main door, you’ll find the huge cathedral bowl, which used to be filled with 1,560 litres of wine for special religious occasions. You’ll also tour the Jewish quarter, where you’ll find the ruins of a ritual bath – or mikvah – dating back to the 1100s. The tour wraps up with a look around the main square, before you head back to the ship.
