Mannheim Walking Tour with ‘Bertha Benz’
You’ll travel back to the 19th century on this tour, as you’re showed around Mannheim by ‘Bertha Benz’ – the wife of Karl Benz, who created the world’s first practical automobile. Your guide will be in full period costume and she’ll fill you in on interesting facts about Bertha’s life, her husband and the history of Mannheim. You’ll find out about Bertha’s claim to fame, as the first woman to drive a long-distance journey by automobile in 1888. And you can see the three-wheeled vehicle she drove at the Karl Benz Memorial statue, which sits on Friedrichsplatz. This manicured square is one of the prettiest in Mannheim, with Art Nouveau fountains, colourful flower beds and a neo-Baroque water tower. Nearby, you’ll also get to gawp at the yellow-and-red palace – Germany’s biggest Baroque palace.
