Zoe Lyons has one of those faces you immediately recognise. It’s not just her struggling-to-hold-a-laugh-in smile, you’ll remember her for, though. She’s a regular on Mock the Week, has bagged a tonne of awards and is an Edinburgh Fringe favourite. We joined her out in Jamaica where she was holidaying with fellow comedian and friend Mark Watson to hear all about her good, bad and hilarious holiday memories. In between trips to the seven mile beach, stocking up at the gourmet dining scene and trips to the swim-up bar she revealed all…
“My first holidays revolved around anoraks on the beach”
I did lots of UK holidays when I was a kid. The classic Devon cottage featured heavily. It usually rained and we’d be on the beach in anoraks. Oh, and there was often a mouse problem too. In fact, it wasn’t a proper holiday unless you found droppings in the kitchen somewhere.
“My last holiday was spent diving in the Maldives”
I was on a boat the whole time, so I was up at 6am every day and in bed by 8pm. It was physically exhausting, but I loved it. I know most people enjoy a cocktail and a snooze but I get really bored and prefer to keep my brain busy
“A lot of my holidays revolve around food”
I’m a big, big eater and I love trying new stuff – I’m most happy when I’ve got a plate in front of me. My favourite is spicy food and going al fresco. I’ve taken All Inclusive to the limit out here at TUI SENSATORI Resort Azul Jamaica. The service has been amazing.
“Holiday hell for me would be camping”
I know it’s very popular and people try and dress it up as glamping, but it’s not. You’re still under a canvas in a field. There’s a compost toilet and I’m not getting involved in that.
“New Zealanders are afraid to laugh”
I’ve toured all over the place, but New Zealand is one of my favourites. Kiwi’s are really sweet people and very open to comedy. The only drawback is that they’re so nice they’re almost afraid to laugh. They’re huge smilers but not big laughers. At least that’s what I told myself to get through the show.
“I’m currently on holiday with fellow comedian Mark Watson”
His lack of preparation has charmed me. And shocked me. For a trip to the tropics, who turns up in a thick knit cardigan? That really took me by surprise. But, bless him, he’s given things a go. He’s not a lilo-master, I’ll tell you that. I didn’t realise how hard it was to get on a lilo until I saw him try and get on one…
