Scooping up mouthfuls of paella on the coast of Spain. Passing around meze platters as the sun sets over Greece. Lashing chunky guacamole all over your dinner in Mexico. Let’s face it – holidays and food go hand-in-hand. But what if you have more of a discerning palette? Well fear not, because we’ve discovered that some of our hotels stash world-class restaurants within their walls. And by that, we mean the crème de la crème – Michelin-starred eateries. And, while these high-end dining spots might call for you to stuff a few more pennies into your pocket, if you’re a foodie, it’ll definitely be worth it. Ready to start our Michelin-star tour of the world?
Reserving a table at Il Gallo d’Oro guarantees you a spot on an exclusive list – it’s Madeira’s first and only Michelin-awarded restaurant. Looks-wise, think classic elegance with contemporary touches, a regal colour palette of gold and brown, and a swish, glass-fronted wine cellar that houses 300 bottles of the finest tipple. Executive Chef Benoît Sinthon introduces a seasonal menu inspired by local market produce and the surrounding Atlantic Ocean. The autumn 2016 menu includes the likes of artichoke cappuccino, veal served with ‘forest treasures’, and the mysterious ‘London Eye’ dessert.
As for The Cliff Bay Hotel, it’s a true retreat, boasting panoramas of Funchal Harbour, and a duo of horizon-view swimming pools.
It seems we’re kicking off our brand new City Breaks collection in award-winning style, with the introduction of the world-famous MGM Grand. The hotel already brags an astronomical 15 restaurants, but we’ve fallen for the eponymous eatery of Joël Robuchon, the man with more Michelin stars than any other chef on the planet. The Frenchman brings his native fare – albeit in the form of haute cuisine – to Sin City, with a tasting menu that takes you through dishes like frog leg fritters, sea urchin on potato and fennel puree, and Campari-infused grapefruit sorbet.
Aside from having more restaurants than players in a football team, the MGM Grand offers up everything you’d expect from the biggest single hotel in America. We’re talking pool parties hosted by famous DJs, a TopGolf driving range, and a Cirque du Soleil theatre.
Marbella’s fondness for life’s finer things is no secret, so the resort’s a perfect setting for the Michelin-starred Messina. As well as a fine à la carte selection, you get the pick of two tasting menus at this place. Opt for one of them, and you’ll be served things like oyster with apple sorbet, Malaga goat, fresh skate served with a saffron emulsion, and Thai-style torrijas, which are – confusingly – Spain’s answer to French toast.
When it comes to the accommodation, the adults-only Amare Marbella Beach Hotel is Marbella through and through – white-on-white bedrooms, a stylish beach club, and a rooftop bar.
Not content with just one Michelin-starred restaurant, this hotel managed to squeeze in a second. The first is M.B., brought to you by famed Basque chef Martín Berasategui, who we recently caught up with. M.B.’s tasting menu is another that changes seasonally, with its most recent iteration including pickled oyster served with cucumber sake slush, and iced chocolate sponge with frozen whisky. Then, there’s the recently-renovated Abama Kabuki, a theatrical Japanese fusion venue, where you can order the likes of fish and chips served as a sushi dish, and wagyu beef ribs in a teriyaki sauce.
The setting for this award-winning duo – the Ritz-Carlton, Abama – counts glossy gardens, seven swimming pools, and swanky Moorish-style buildings as some of its luxury features.

The strip’s biggest hotel, the MGM Grand, lines up pool parties headlined by famous DJs, a supersized nightclub and 15 restaurants.
is a clifftop retreat that hides Martín’s two-Michelin-starred M.B restaurant – the Canaries’ only Michelin-awarded eatery.
With up-to-the-minute interiors and a plush beach club, the Amare Beach Hotel Marbella is the perfect grown-up retreat.
