New York is without a doubt one of the coolest cities in the world. It’s famous for its cutting edge fashion as well as its top restaurants, and we’ve got the ultimate guide on some of the most popular spots in town - in addition to a few hidden gems. Here blogger and New York native Alex Baackes reveals her favourite places to eat and shop in the city.
I’ve always thought New York was called ‘the city that never sleeps’ because the only way to do, see, and eat everything this great metropolis has to offer would be to forgo bedtime.
With five beautiful boroughs - The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island and Manhattan – at your feet, there’s always something or somewhere new to explore. Who could consider slumber while there are Bushwick galleries opening around town and roller blade dance parties happening in Central Park?
Or even special edition sneakers going on sale in Soho and new ice cream flavours launching in Red Hook, Brooklyn?
You could spend a lifetime on these streets and still be surprised when you pop up from the subway.
These are my favourite places to shop and eat whenever New York calls me home.
Dirt Candy is a popular vegetarian restaurant in Manhattan's Lower East Side that appeals to vegans and omnivores alike. It also has a rather unique strict no tipping policy, as service charges are already included.
Serving authentic Mexican cuisine out of the back of converted VW buses, these hip taquerias are a great place to grab a bite. Order up a few fresh juices, treat yourself to a couple tacos and soak up the atmosphere of this Yucatán-inspired eatery.
Treat yourself to dinner and a film at Nitehawk, an indie movie theatre/restaurant hybrid in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. There’s a specially crafted menu for each film, like Knockout Punch bourbon for the latest Jason Bourne installment.
Beloved by tourists and locals alike, Chelsea Market is a bustling Manhattan fixture with more than thirty unique shops and restaurants. Don’t miss Artists & Fleas, where you can buy direct from New York artists and designers.
Named after the Olympics tradition, Opening Ceremony
No one does Halloween like New Yorkers, so why save it for one day a year? Halloween Adventure is an enormous emporium of all things fancy dress. It’s open all the time and is a great place to browse. Don’t be surprised if you come out in costume.
Our selection of city breaks to New York could be just the ticket.

Broadway, Central Park, Fifth Avenue - they're all within striking distance of the larger-than-life Riu Plaza New York Times Square.
The Sanctuary Hotel New York does exactly what it says on the tin – it’s a boutique-style retreat nestled in Times Square.
You'll need a month to explore the neighbourhood of Broadway shows and comedy clubs around the Belvedere Hotel.
