Spain is made for family holidays. In fact, record numbers are rushing to book a trip to the land of sun, sea and siestas this summer. It’s got theme parks, lively resorts and more Blue Flag beaches than anywhere else. And, best of all, there are loads of child-friendly resorts, too. Here’s where you should head with your brood this year…
Marbella Playa
With 24 beaches, great shopping and theme parks nearby, Marbella Playa has got a lot more than nightclubs up its sleeve. This hotel has a sea-facing pool with waterfalls and slides, and there’s lively evening entertainment. Elsewhere, there’s a pirate-themed play area and a mini-golf course. And when it comes to kids’ clubs, there’s one for little ones, plus another for teens. At night, there are pirate shows and a mini-cinema.
Magic Aqua Rock Gardens
Water babies will love Benidorm's Magic Aqua Rock Gardens - the pool scene ticks off a TV screen, in-water loungers and slides. Over 18s get a chill-out zone with Balinese beds and a hot tub, while kids have a mini-splash park. Dining options get the seal of approval from younger guests, with treats like candy floss and chocolate fountains. It’s easy to get out and about, too – all-action Levante Beach is just five minutes’ walk away. Here, there’s an in-sea playground, where bridges and slides are watched over by lifeguards.
Hotel Aquarium and Spa
Lloret de Mar is home to 5 Blue Flag strips of beach – some are action-packed, while others are secluded. And if it’s adrenaline you’re after, Waterworld Lloret is just outside the resort. You’ll find Hotel Aquarium and Spa on the quiet side of town, five minutes’ walk from the beach and restaurants. There’s a kids’ club, and an archery range for older children.
If you're feeling peckish...
Eating out in Spain is a family activity. Children are usually welcome no matter what the time of day, and there are plenty of dishes to try. Croquetas de jamon are similar to potato croquettes, but filled with ham, and Spanish meatballs, or albondigas, feature on most tapas menus. For dessert, you can’t go wrong with churros, which are served with warm chocolate for dipping.
Family Life Avenida Suites
This hotel in Salou is part of our Family Life collection, so a kids’ club and parent and baby room are both part of the deal. Youngsters can head to the kids’ club, or skim down mini-slides in the splash park. Outside, there’s a bar serving kid-friendly snacks like pizza and ice cream, and parents can head to Thea’s Coffee Shop for their morning cappuccino. Plus, it’s a 10-minute bus ride from PortAventura – one of Europe’s biggest theme parks.
Tropic Garden
There are 6,000 square metres to explore at the aptly-named Tropic Garden in Santa Eulalia. Within that, you’ve got a huge pool, a tennis court, playground, and spots for aerobics, yoga and volleyball. Plus, they’ve just built a kids’ splash zone. The entertainment team score top marks from the TripAdvisor crowd – they organise sports tournaments, pool challenges and games of Cluedo or mini-discos at night-time. Outside the hotel, you can get to Santa Eulalia’s quiet beach in 15 minutes, and the marina’s restaurants and bars in 10.
HG Jardin de Menorca
HG Jardin de Menorca in Son Bou gets high praise for its family-sized suites. There are also 2 kids’ pools, a soft play area and a children’s club. During the day, puppet shows and pool games are on the agenda, and there’s a bouncy castle in the evening. The hotel’s free shuttle bus will take you into Son Bou, too. The town’s just as family-orientated, lining up a bowling alley and Club Sant Jaime, where you can use the waterslides and wooden maze for free.
Bellevue Club
Bellevue Club in Alcudia packs in loads of family-friendly features, like 8 pools, 7 tennis courts and a go-karting track. There’s even a fairground with dodgems, trampolines and a bouncy castle. Plus, there’s sailing and kayaking on the neighbouring lake. For days out, Alcudia Beach is 15 minutes’ walk away or a 5-minute boat ride. And there’s a handy strip of bars, shops and restaurants just down the road. At the hotel, nights are rounded off with mini-discos, singers and magicians. Alternatively, there’s a games room and bowling alley at the Morocco Bar.
