There are two things Rudesheim’s known for – its historic hilltop monument and its wine. You’ll get the chance to experience both on this tour. Your first mode of transport is a land train, known as the Winzerexpress. You’ll drive through the narrow streets of the old town, before reaching the cable car station. Then you’ll switch land for sky, as you board the hillside cable car. At the top, you’ll get a guided tour of the Niederwald Monument, which commemorates the unification of the German Empire after the Franco-Prussian war. But its interesting history is trumped by the staggering views over the vineyards of the Rhine Valley. You’ll take the cable car back down, then make a beeline to Drosselgasse – the town’s bustling main street – for some free time. It’s worth popping in to one of its many pubs to taste the highly acclaimed local Riesling.
