Tangier City Tour
Arranged like an amphitheatre on the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier’s a bustling port on one of the world’s most important waterways. Known as the White City, the first thing you’ll notice about the place is the jumble of white houses that huddle around the port - that and the skyline of Christian spires and Muslim minarets which hint to its fascinating past. This trip kicks off with a drive to visit the Kasbah's Museum. An exotic mix, highlighting Morocco’s history, art and antiquities discovered in Roman sites. Your next stop is the lighthouse at Cap Spartel on the extreme north promontory of Africa. On a clear day, you can see the extraordinary meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Then it’s time to head back to Tangier for a visit to the Kasbah, the fortified citadel within the old town. You’ll also see Mendoubia park, the vibrant fruit and vegetable market and the city’s throbbing heart, the Grand Socco, a huge marketplace that echoes with the shouts of haggling merchants. Of course, no visit would be complete without a trip to the medina, a labyrinth of tiny streets crammed with shops at the petit socco.
Tetouan
The city of Tetouan is set in the dramatic greenery of the Rif Mountains and the colour-drenched Martil Valley. Here, a belt of orchards, planted with orange, almond, pomegranate and cypress trees, is studded with dazzling white houses. Locals affectionately call their city ‘The Daughter of Granada’ as the architecture here’s heavily dominated by the Hispanic influence. It’s hardly surprising – the city was built by Muslim refugees from Spain in the 15th-century, and expanded by the Spanish government in the 20th-century. Arriving here, your day begins at the main city gate, Bab el Okla. From here, it’s up to the quaint medina, one of the most fascinating in Morocco. Carry on to the Souk el Hots, with its traditional fabric shops, and stop at the Place de l’Usàa, for a look at the impressive buildings. Finally, you’ll view the outside of the King Palace, a great example of Hispano-Moresque architecture, before it’s time to head back to the ship.
