The Acropolis and its crowning jewel, the Parthenon, offer a glimpse into the glory of ancient Greece. This UNESCO World Heritage Site stands as a symbol of architectural and cultural brilliance, with nearby landmarks like the Ancient Agora and the Temple of Olympian Zeus completing the picture of Athens’ illustrious past.

Thessaloniki

It may take a few days to discover Thessaloniki, but it only takes an instant to fall in love with her. Ample archaeological sites and museums, a lively art and nightlife scene, local cuisine to write home about, and a mild Mediterranean climate – it’s clear to see why so many rave about the picturesque Greek city.

There’s plenty of things to see and do in Thessaloniki itself, but the city is also the gateway to historical Macedonia – which is well worth checking out. A day trip to the region allows to dive deep into the culture of the ancient kingdom, ticking off all the must-sees. You can soak up the scenery at the picturesque waterfalls of Edessa, before discovering the ruins of the School of Aristotle in Naoussa – the place where the famous Greek philosopher taught his disciples and spread his ideals of philosophy, including Alexander the Great. Perhaps you’d prefer to visit one of the region’s major showpieces, the UNESCO-listed Archaeological Site of Aigai. Explore the ancient citadel, home to over 300 royal tombs – including that of Philip II, Alexander the Great’s father. Just a few miles away, you’ll find the charming town of Veria, known as ‘Beroea’ in biblical times. Here, you can visit the Bema of Saint Paul, before strolling through the old Jewish neighbourhood and the colourful market area. You can also discover the archaeological site of ancient Pella – the capital of Macedonia and the birthplace of Alexander the Great. Marvel at its architecture, such as a 4th century B.C. villa with spectacular mosaic floors. Another top sight is the Archaeological Park of Dion, where you’ll be able to spot different species of wildlife, as well as many classical and religious artifacts.

Before driving back to Delphi, drive to the town of Pella, best known as the historical capital of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon and the birthplace of Alexander the Great. On the site of the ancient city is the Archaeological Museum of Pella, as well as large, 4th-century B.C. villas with mosaic floors portraying scenes such as lions hunting and Dionysus riding a panther. After leaving Pella, proceed to the Archaeological Park of Dion, an open-air archaeological site at the foot of Mount Olympus, which houses almost as much wildlife as it does classical and religious artifacts. In the afternoon, drive south through Thessaly, Lamia, and Thermopylae – where we will stop to see the Leonidas Monument.
