Greece's natural gems: Ionian island Lefkada & Meteora

The picturesque and atmospheric city of Ioannina, situated on the shores of Lake Pamvotida, holds some of northern Greece's most treasured historic sights. Christian, Islamic and Jewish influences have shaped its architecture and history, and days can be spent strolling through the old part of town, surrounded by the ruins of a Byzantine Castle and walls, where you'll find colourful houses and mosques alongside quaint cafes. Take a boat trip to the lake island and visit its monasteries, sample the local cuisine and soak up the incredible views.

The gateway to the Meteora peaks, Kalambaka is a cosy traditional town located in the heart of Greece. A town steeped in history, Kalambaka’s origins date back to ancient Greece under the name Aeginio. It would later become an important religious centre where its first cathedrals and churches were built. During the Ottoman Empire, the town received its current name 'Kalambaka' meaning 'sturdy fortress' and became an important commercial hub.

The seaside town of Preveza is a truly pretty sight, with rows of coloured houses lining its hillside and overlooking the crystal clear waters of the Ambracian Gulf. Though Preveza has a distinct island feel, the town is actually connected to the Greek mainland, its scenic harbour awash with fishing boats and seafood restaurants and with plenty of beaches along its 60km of coastline. In the historic centre you’ll find a number of stylish boutiques and quaint meze bars, and in the surroundings you can visit the ancient city of Nikopolis.
