Full-day Khao Sok tour with elephant sanctuary and bamboo rafting

Are you ready for an adventure with a uniquely Khao Sok touch? Uncover some of Thailand's best-kept secrets on an exclusive tour that ticks all the boxes. You'll combine a variety of activities, ranging from the cultural to the natural. Haggle with locals in a market, meet elephants at a sanctuary and mingle with monkeys in a temple. Tina, one of our expert local guides, says, "You'll be able to see just how the workers here look after the elephants, including how they get in the water with the animals. You'll see this for yourself, and help out the sanctuary staff by preparing the elephant's food."The fun begins at Takuapa market, where you'll get to taste fresh Thai fruit while meeting the locals. We move it up a gear next at the viewpoint in Khao Sok National Park, before a trip to the local rainforest sanctuary to meet the elephants. The sanctuary is where elderly elephants, who are unable to work, live their daily lives. Once you have helped out with the prep, you'll be able to prepare healthy treats for the elephants and walk with them through the tropical jungle. And, there's more to come. Snap up some pics at the viewpoint in Khao Sok National Park, before arriving at a restaurant to tuck into a traditional Thai lunchtime feast. As it that wasn't enough, you'll get to try river bamboo rafting, sailing along the river before wrapping things up with a sense of zen at ‘Monkey Cave'. Inside is serene and beautiful, with an intricately decorated shrine and often monks praying. You might also catch sight of birds and bats in the cave, but the monkeys generally stay outside. Then swap culture for nature with lunch at the beach and a visit to a turtle rescue centre. Introducing Khao Lak

Just an hour’s drive from Phuket, yet a world away to all intents and purposes, lies the unspoiled region of Khao Lak. Miles of golden coastline, wildlife-rich national parks and tropical forests await you at this tranquil resort destination. With plenty of things to see and do, Khao Lak goes beyond the more traditional beach resort activities and offers an authentic Thai experience. It’s no wonder that the resort is popular with all types of holidaymakers, including families, nature lovers and adventure seekers.

The six best things to do in Khao Lak

1. Experience the beaches of Khao Lak

Khao Lak abounds with pristine, postcard-perfect beaches. The most popular ones are Nan Thong, which is popular for swimming, sunbathing and snorkelling, and Bang Niang, which is famous for its incredible sunsets. If you’re after something more low-key, Pak Weep is the place to go. It’s idyllic atmosphere and shallow waters make it a great pick for families. And for total relaxation, you’ve got the secluded Bang Sak beach, a local favourite with nothing more than a few seafood stalls. With so many inviting stretches of sand to choose from, Khao Lak has all the ingredients for a perfect beach holiday.

2. Immerse yourself in nature at Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park

Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park is a luxuriant wilderness dotted with limestone cliffs, cascading waterfalls and hiking trails. Its dense jungle is home to many species of birds and reptiles, as well as exotic trees and plants. After trekking through the park’s nature trails, you can enjoy a rewarding dip in the pools under waterfalls or kick back on the secluded sandy beach. It’s the perfect place to take in Thailand’s raw beauty.

3. Try local cuisine at a street market

A trip to Thailand isn’t complete without visiting a local street market. Khao Lak’s largest and oldest, Bang Niang Night Market, is the perfect way to get a taste of local culture. As you make your way through the bustling streets, mouth-watering aromas drift into your soul. You’ll be spoilt for choice with barbecued meat, fresh fish, vegetables and exotic fruit. If you’re feeling especially adventurous, smoked insects such as caterpillars, crickets and scorpions are also on the menu.

4. Visit a turtle sanctuary

The tropical waters of Khao Lak are home to many endangered turtle species, which are sadly on the brink of extinction. Luckily, the town is actively involved in their conservation with the help of two turtle sanctuaries. Here, hatchlings are nursed until they’re strong enough to be released into the sea. One of the sanctuaries also rehabilitates injured turtles and has a fish-breeding programme. If you’d like to get up close to these magnificent creatures while supporting a good cause, a visit to one of Khao Lak’s turtle sanctuaries is a must.

5. Go island hopping

With a collection of remote islands just a boat ride away, Khao Lak is an ideal base for island-hopping expeditions. You can take a speedboat across the azure waters to the island of your choice. Consisting of nine islets and boasting UNESCO World Heritage Site status, the Similan Islands are a must-visit. Clear blue waters, white sands and ancient coral reefs await you here. What’s more, the islands are considered by many to be one of the top 10 diving spots in the world. The Surin Islands are another unmissable archipelago – their flat reefs and fascinating underwater world make them one of Thailand’s best snorkelling locations. If you’re lucky, you may even spot whale sharks, eagle rays and dolphins during a boat tour to the islands.

6. Relax at the hot springs

If you’re looking for a relaxing experience away from the beach, a soak in one of Khao Lak’s hot springs is a great option. Strategically located close to the national parks, they’re a well-deserved treat after a long trek. These bubbly pools are full of thermal waters, which come straight from the underground, passing through layers of rocks on the way. Loaded with dissolved minerals and offering a variety of health benefits, they’re the perfect evening activity or cloudy day alternative.
