Johannesburg

Johannesburg, also known as Joburg or Jozi, is the beating heart of South Africa and a city that never stands still. This dynamic metropolis emerged during the 19th-century gold rush and grew into the country's economic and cultural centre. You'll discover a fascinating mix of past and present here: from the impressive Apartheid Museum and historic Soweto to trendy neighbourhoods like Maboneng and Rosebank. The city buzzes with creativity, featuring street art, lively markets and a thriving culinary scene. Johannesburg sits on the highveld and offers a pleasant climate with plenty of sunny days. From the city, you can easily take trips to the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or to wildlife parks in the surrounding area. Joburg surprises you with its energy, hospitality and authentic South African spirit.

Important Remarks

Arrival in Johannesburg
For late arrivals, we recommend booking a hotel near Johannesburg Airport and collecting the rental car at the airport the following morning. This avoids driving in the dark after.
For early arrivals, you may choose a hotel further from the airport and collect your rental car immediately upon arrival on day 1. In this case, please replace the airport transfer with car rental starting on day 1.

Departure from Johannesburg
If you have a late afternoon or evening flight, you can drive directly from Pilanesberg to Johannesburg Airport on your departure day. Allow approximately 3 hours for the journey, plus sufficient time to return your rental car and check in.
For morning or early afternoon flights, we recommend adding an extra night in or near Johannesburg to ensure a relaxed departure.

Hazyview
Hazyview is an ideal base for exploring the southern section of Kruger National Park via Phabeni Gate or Numbi Gate. The Skukuza region is particularly rewarding for self-drive safaris, with frequent sightings of elephants, giraffes, zebras and, with some luck, the Big Five.

Tip: Explore the spectacular Panorama Route, including Blyde River Canyon, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and God’s Window, either as a day trip or on your way to Phalaborwa.

Phalaborwa
Phalaborwa provides easy access to central Kruger National Park, a quieter region of mopane woodland, open bushveld and scenic river landscapes. One of the highlights is the Olifants River, which attracts a wide variety of wildlife. Elephants, hippos, crocodiles and numerous bird species can often be spotted along its banks. The viewpoints around Olifants Rest Camp offer spectacular views over the river and surrounding wilderness.

Tzaneen & Magoebaskloof
Tzaneen lies in a lush, mountainous region, offering a refreshing contrast to Kruger’s savannah landscapes. Discover the scenic Magoebaskloof Pass, winding through forests and rolling hills, or visit the picturesque Debengeni Waterfalls.
The area is also known for its avocado, citrus and tea plantations. Its peaceful atmosphere and beautiful green scenery make it a wonderful nature stop.

Bela-Bela
Bela-Bela and Modimolle are located in the scenic Waterberg region, known for its rolling hills, bushveld landscapes and peaceful atmosphere. Bela-Bela is famous for its natural hot springs, while the surrounding countryside offers opportunities for nature walks, wildlife viewing and relaxation. Enjoy the tranquillity of the African bush, admire the beautiful scenery or simply unwind at your accommodation before continuing your journey to Pilanesberg National Park.

Pilanesberg National Park
Pilanesberg National Park offers a memorable finale to your wildlife adventure. Set within an ancient volcanic crater landscape, the park features rolling hills, open grasslands and scenic waterholes. Home to the Big Five, giraffes, zebras and abundant birdlife, Pilanesberg is ideal for self-drive safaris or guided game drives. Explore the park at your own pace and enjoy a final opportunity to experience South Africa’s remarkable wildlife.
