Important Remarks

Please note: a proper 4x4 vehicle is required for this self-drive tour.
This journey takes you into Namibia's remote far north, where road conditions can be challenging and mobile coverage and roadside assistance are limited. To explore this region safely, a 4x4 with high ground clearance - such as a Toyota Fortuner or Toyota Hilux - is essential. A standard SUV is not suitable for this area and may result in breakdowns, delays, or being unable to complete parts of the itinerary.

If the 4x4 option does not appear automatically, please review the available vehicle categories and manually select a suitable 4x4 during the booking process.

Important Remarks

Important note on accommodation locations: Damaraland & Kaokoland
Please be aware that although distances in these regions may appear manageable on the map, road conditions can be challenging and often result in significantly longer travel times than expected.

Our sample itinerary includes overnight stays in carefully selected locations. If lodges in these areas are fully booked, the system may suggest alternative accommodations elsewhere in the region. However, these alternatives may not always be suitable, as they can add substantial travel time and disrupt the intended pacing of the journey.

We strongly recommend keeping the overnight stay as close as possible to the selected itinerary locations to ensure a comfortable and safe journey. This allows for a more relaxed, safe and enjoyable travel pace.

Important Remarks

Important note on accommodation location: Sesriem vs. Solitaire (Sossusvlei area)
When choosing accommodation in the Sossusvlei area, please note the important difference in location between Sesriem and Solitaire.
Lodges in Sesriem are located close to the entrance of Namib-Naukluft National Park, offering easy access to the dunes.
Accommodations around Solitaire are often set in beautiful, remote desert locations and are generally about one hour’s drive from the park entrance, plus additional driving inside the park to reach Sossusvlei.
Staying near Solitaire offers stunning scenery and great value, but you should be aware of the longer driving times when selecting your accommodation.

Highlights

  • Fish River Canyon - spectacular views over one of the world’s largest canyons.
  • Sossusvlei - iconic dunes, including Dune 45 and Big Daddy
  • Swakopmund - charming coastal town with German‑influenced architecture
  • Damaraland - dramatic rocky landscapes and ancient geological formations
  • Etosha National Park - one of Africa’s top wildlife destinations
  • Epupa Falls - spectacular waterfalls on the remote border with Angola

Pickup Instructions

When collecting your rental car, make sure it's equipped with at least one good spare tire and all the tools needed to change a flat. Ensure the tires are in good condition and check the tire pressure regularly. Choosing a robust vehicle with extra spare tires will help prevent delays and ensure a safer, more enjoyable journey.

Fuel and supplies:

  • Fuel stations are far apart.
  • Always fill up whenever you can, even if the tank is half full.
  • Many remote stations only accept cash, so carry enough Namibian dollars.
  • Stock up on water, snacks, and basic groceries before leaving larger towns.

Navigation & Communication

  • Mobile coverage is limited or non-existent in remote areas.
  • Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me).
  • A paper map is recommended as backup.
  • Inform your lodge or next accommodation if you expect to arrive late.
  • We recommend renting a satellite phone with your rental car company - may need prior reservation.

Opuwo & Epupa Falls

  • Roads to Epupa can be rough; drive slowly and carefully.
  • A sturdy 4x4 with high clearance is required for this route.
  • If you are unsure about a road or riverbed, don’t attempt to cross it - ask locals or your lodge for advice.
  • Carry extra water, as temperatures can be very high.
  • Always check with your lodge or locals if your planned route is accessible, especially during the rainy season.
  • This is a remote and culturally sensitive area.
  • Always ask permission before photographing people, especially Himba communities.

Damaraland

  • Roads can include gravel with corrugation, rocky tracks, riverbeds and occasional soft sand - all manageable with a proper 4x4.
  • Desert‑adapted elephants may be on or near the road - keep distance and never block their path.
  • Lodges are often far apart; plan your driving time realistically and avoid driving after dark.

Staying in Aus - Exploring Kolmanskop & Lüderitz
A two-night stay in Aus offers the perfect base to explore some of southern Namibia's most fascinating highlights.
Just outside town, a visit to the Garub waterhole offers the chance to see the famous Namib Desert wild horses.
A visit to Kolmanskop, the iconic ghost town slowly reclaimed by the desert, is highly recommended. Wandering through its sand-filled buildings offers a unique glimpse into Namibia’s diamond mining past and is one of the most photogenic sites in the country. From Kolmanskop, continue to the coastal town of Lüderitz, known for its colourful colonial architecture and dramatic Atlantic coastline. Highlights include its colourful colonial architecture, historic harbour and the scenic drive around the Diaz Point peninsula, where you may spot penguins, seals and seabirds along the rugged Atlantic coast. After a day of exploration, return to Aus to enjoy its peaceful desert surroundings and wide-open landscapes.
