Mae Hong Son Loop: Thailand's most scenic self-drive

Individual Tour
10 DaysThailand
Important Remarks

The Mae Hong Son Loop is one of Thailand’s most scenic self-drive routes, taking you through lush mountains, charming villages and authentic northern landscapes. Along the way, you will discover a side of Thailand that feels untouched and far from the crowds.

The journey is known for its many curves and mountain roads, making it a true road trip experience. With well-planned stops and comfortable driving distances, this itinerary allows you to enjoy both the journey and the destinations at a relaxed pace.

  • The route is famous for its 1,000+ curves and includes winding mountain roads. While roads are generally well maintained, you can expect steep section and sharp bends, making a confident driving style advisable.
  • Distances may seem short, but travel times can be longer - not only due to the curves, but also because you will want to stop frequently to take in the views (photo stops!).
  • We recommend choosing an automatic car for maximum comfort.
  • Around Pai, you may encounter more scooters on the road - extra attention in this area is recommended.
  • The best travel period is from November to February for pleasant temperatures and clear views.
  • Please note that driving is on the left-hand side, and an international driving licence is required.

Leaving Chiang Mai, you enter the lush Mae Sa Valley, passing orchid farms and the Mae Sa Waterfall. A short detour brings you to the beautiful Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden.
As you continue toward Mae Taeng, consider stopping at the peaceful Mork Fa Waterfall, the hilltop Wat Pang Hang Dab Pai Chai Mongkol temple, or the Lahu hill tribe in Ban Lahu Shi Ba Lan village for a glimpse into traditional highland life.
The final stretch leads you deeper into the mountains. You may wish to make a short detour to relax at the Pong Dueat Hot Springs. Along the way, you’ll pass through villages home to Karen (famous for the ‘long-neck’ women), Lahu and Lisu communities.
As you descend into the Pai valley, bright green rice fields unfold across the landscape. Just before reaching Pai, the striking Pai Canyon offers sweeping views and a memorable final stop.

Today you’ll travel one of the most beautiful stretches of the famous Mae Hong Son loop. Start early if you wish to visit the impressive Tham Lod Cave, one of Thailand’s most spectacular caves, explored with a local guide.
The scenic route takes you through countless hairpin bends and panoramic views to the charming village of Soppong - a perfect spot for a coffee or lunch break. Continuing towards Mae Hong Son, you’ll pass the Lisu village of Ban Luk Khao Lam and the mystical Fish Cave, home to thousands of fish.
Optional detours include the picturesque Pha Suea Waterfall and the unique mountain village of Ban Rak Thai, known for its tea plantations and Chinese atmosphere near the Myanmar border.

Mae Hong Son is beautifully set between mountains near the Myanmar border. The town’s temples and golden pagodas reflect strong Burmese influences. Optional activities include a boat trip on the Pai River, with a visit to Ban Nam Pieng Din, home to the Padaung ‘longneck’ hill tribe. In the afternoon, head up to Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu for panoramic views over the valley.
Don’t miss the unique Su Tong Pae Bamboo Bridge, a 500-metre-long bamboo bridge stretching across rice fields. You may also visit a local Lisu village if you didn’t have the chance earlier.

Today you follow a quieter and less-traveled stretch of the Mae Hong Son Loop towards Mae Sariang, with sweeping views of mountains, forests and valleys.
Start your day with a relaxing stop at the Pha Bong Hot Spring. Continue to the small trading town of Khun Yuam, where you can visit Wat Muai To. A short detour leads to the seasonal sunflower fields of Doi Mae U-Kho.

Along the way, pass small villages and rural landscapes where local life remains authentic. There are several opportunities to stop at viewpoints or local markets.
Mae Sariang is beautifully set along the river and offers a relaxed atmosphere. On arrival, you may visit a local temple or enjoy sunset by the riverside.

Today you travel back to Chiang Mai along a scenic route through rolling hills, forests and rural landscapes.
Along the way, pass small villages and local markets where you can experience everyday life in Northern Thailand. There are several opportunities to stop for viewpoints or a short break. Optional stop at Ban Tawai, known for its traditional handicrafts and woodcarving.

For those wishing to include Doi Inthanon National Park, Thailand’s highest mountain (2,565 m), this route can be included today. The park offers lush jungle, waterfalls and panoramic viewpoints, as well as the famous twin pagodas near the summit. However, due to the longer driving time, this option is more intensive.
For a more relaxed experience, we recommend visiting Doi Inthanon as a separate daytrip from Chiang Mai.
