Cairo

Situated on the Nile, Cairo is famous for its own history, preserved in the fabulous medieval Islamic city and the Coptic sites in Old Cairo - historic Cairo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Egyptian Museum in the city centre is a must, with its countless Ancient Egyptian artefacts, as is shopping in the Khan al-Khalili bazaar. A visit to Cairo is not complete without visiting the pyramids of Giza and the nearby pyramid complex of Saqqara, where visitors can see Egypt's first step pyramid, built by architect Imhotep for third-dynasty pharaoh Djoser.
