Important Remarks
For all self-drive tours in Namibia, we strongly recommend booking at least a sturdy SUV or 4×4 vehicle. This is essential given the condition of gravel roads and off‑road tracks across the country. Many regions are remote, with limited mobile phone coverage, and unsuitable vehicles are more prone to flat tires or breakdowns. Choosing a robust vehicle greatly reduces the risk of delays and ensures a safer, more comfortable, and enjoyable travel experience.
If the SUV or 4x4 option is not displayed by default, please check the available vehicle types and manually select a suitable vehicle during the booking process.
Important Remarks
Arrival in Cape Town
If you arrive late in the evening and prefer not to drive after dark, you can book a transfer to your hotel and collect your rental car from Cape Town International Airport on a later day. Simply replace the rental car on day 1 with an airport transfer and start your car rental on day 2, 3 or 4, depending on your preference.
Departure from Windhoek
If you have a late afternoon or evening flight, you can drive directly from Otjiwarongo to Hosea Kutako International Airport on your departure day. Allow approximately 3 hours for the journey, plus sufficient time to return your rental car and check in.
For morning or early afternoon flights, we recommend adding an extra night in or near Windhoek for a more relaxed departure.
Important Remarks
Important note on accommodation location: Sesriem vs. Solitaire (Sossusvlei area)
When choosing accommodation in the Sossusvlei area, please note the important difference in location between Sesriem and Solitaire.
Lodges in Sesriem are located close to the entrance of Namib-Naukluft National Park, offering easy access to the dunes.
Accommodations around Solitaire are often set in beautiful, remote desert locations and are generally about one hour’s drive from the park entrance, plus additional driving inside the park to reach Sossusvlei.
Staying near Solitaire offers stunning scenery and great value, but you should be aware of the longer driving times when selecting your accommodation.
Important Remarks
Important note on accommodation locations: Damaraland
Please be aware that although distances in these regions may appear manageable on the map, road conditions can be challenging and often result in significantly longer travel times than expected.
Our sample itinerary includes overnight stays in carefully selected locations. If lodges in these areas are fully booked, the system may suggest alternative accommodations elsewhere in the region. However, these alternatives may not always be suitable, as they can add substantial travel time and disrupt the intended pacing of the journey.
We strongly recommend keeping the overnight stay as close as possible to the selected itinerary locations to ensure a comfortable and safe journey. This allows for a more relaxed, safe and enjoyable travel pace.
Important Remarks
Maintenance work on the Table Mountain cable car takes place every year between the end of July and the beginning of September. Check the cable car website for the exact period: www.tablemountain.net. During this period, it is not possible to reach the summit of Table Mountain by cable car. It is possible to get there on foot, but this requires time and a good level of fitness. Alternatively, you can walk to Lion's Head, where the views are at least as good as those from Table Mountain.
Fuel and supplies in Namibia
- Fuel stations are far apart.
- Always fill up whenever you can, even if the tank is half full.
- Many remote stations only accept cash, so carry enough Namibian dollars.
- Stock up on water, snacks, and basic groceries before leaving larger towns.
Navigation & Communication in Namibia
- Mobile coverage is limited or non-existent in remote areas.
- Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me).
- A paper map is recommended as backup.
- Inform your lodge or next accommodation if you expect to arrive late.
Pickup Instructions
When collecting your rental car, make sure it's equipped with at least one good spare tire and all the tools needed to change a flat. Ensure the tires are in good condition and check the tire pressure regularly. Choosing a robust vehicle with extra spare tires will help prevent delays and ensure a safer, more enjoyable journey.
