The first European explorers came into contact in the 16th century under the Kotte Kingdom. Colombo remained the capital through Portuguese, Dutch and British rule and continued after the country's independence in 1948. Due to its strategic relevance, Colombo became a thriving city and today it's more developed compared to its neighbouring towns. It's considered to be less conservative and more international as branded and imported goods arrive here first.
