Fogo feels quite different from Sal. Known as Cape Verde's volcano island, it's shaped by Pico do Fogo, old lava fields and communities that have made their home around the volcano. You'll fly over from Sal for the day, starting in São Filipe, where your local guide will introduce you to the historic capital and its colourful sobrados, traditional houses you'll spot around town. “The volcano is part of everyday life here,” says João, one of our local guides. “Once you explore Fogo, you start to see just how much it has shaped the island.”
And you'll soon see exactly what he means. As you head towards Chã das Caldeiras, you'll travel across stretches of old lava and through villages like Achada Furna and Portela, where communities have rebuilt following past eruptions. Along the way, you'll stop for views of Pico do Fogo and the crater formed during the 2014 eruption, seeing for yourself how the volcano has shaped both the landscape and life around it.
Lunch is next, with a stop at a local restaurant in Chã das Caldeiras, followed by a visit to the winery, where vines grow in the island's volcanic soil, before making your way back to São Filipe Airport. From here, you'll fly back to Sal, with a transfer waiting to take you to your hotel.
