Built between 1755 and 1873, this incredible triumph arch celebrates the rebirth of Lisbon after the terrible earthquake of 1755. It was originally conceived as a bell tower, but it was then changed into its current form after a century: its is now one of the most famous monuments in Lisbon and represents the strenght and tradition of Portuguese people.
The arch is decorated with different statutes and inscriptions, celebrating some of the most important personalities in Portuguese history like Nuno Alvares Pereira, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Marquis of Pombal and Vasco da Gama, as well as other aspects of Portugal, such its nature and the virtue of its inhabitants.
