Rethymno lies pinched between the Mediterranean Sea and the foothills of the White Mountains on Crete's northern coast, and if its history doesn't have you making a beeline for it, its looks will. Spinalonga is one of Crete's most talked about sights. It was Europe's last leper colony and scores of lepers lived here, in exile from the mainland, until 1957.
