How to make the most of your Russian ruble on holiday

If you’re planning a trip to Russia, you’ll need some rubles. Russia uses the ruble, and although there are a few republics that use this currency unofficially, Russia is actually the only country to officially use the RUB. Each ruble is made up of 100 kopeks.

In 2018, you could generally get around 83 Russian rubles to the pound, but exchange rates can vary of course.

Where to get Russian rubles

Russian rubles used to be quite hard to get outside of Russia. They’re more available now, but many places may not be able to get them. It’s a good idea to pre-order your Russian rubles from your nearest TUI Store, or from us online.

A guide to using Russian rubles abroad

As a general rule, you should budget around 5000 Russian rubles a day for your holiday. Although this sounds like quite a lot, it works out to about £60.

If you need an ATM, you’ll find them in banks. It’s actually illegal to pay for goods and services in anything other than rubles in Russia, so ATMs are handy if you need some extra cash.

Tipping is common in Russia. About 10 to 15% is standard in restaurants, but in hotels it’s considered polite to tip in envelopes with a little thank you note, so small values of cash come in handy.
