Lying in the heart of the Kitzbüheler Alps, there’s so much more to Kitzbühel than meets the eye. Bringing the lakes and the mountains together, it’s centred around a traditional town with a cosmopolitan vibe. Fondly known as ‘Glitzy Kitz’, it’s got history, glamour and a social scene packed with lively places to eat and drink.
Kitzbühel is a seamless combination of Austrian architecture, floral displays and cosmopolitan shops, bars and restaurants. The medieval town walls surround the centre’s cobbled streets, with St Katherine’s church at the heart of it all.
Live music and street performances run throughout the summer. Go for an evening stroll into the town and you can’t help but tap your feet and clap away, as the streets fill with smiles and singing.
Take a journey up the mountains using the summer lifts. At the top you’ll find impressive views and scenic walking routes. Use the gondola or jump on the 2-seater Bichlalm summer chairlift for something a little different.
One of the best ways to see the surrounding area is on an e-bike. Rent them in the resort and join a tour to be shown the must-see sights by a local expert.
Austria’s known for its café culture and Kitzbühel is no exception – sit outside one of the centre’s busy cafés and watch the world go by. Enjoy a coffee and satisfy your sweet tooth with kaiserschmarrn, the traditional chopped up pancake served with fruit compote.
Cool off in the nearby Schwarzsee lake, an easy walk from the town. Relax on the meadow-like banks and take a dip in the warm alpine waters, with slides and diving boards for making a splash.
Alpine flower garden
Head up the Kitzbüheler Horn mountain on the gondola and wander through more than 400 varieties of plants from across the world in the alpine flower garden, including the delicate national flower, edelweiss.
TOP TIP: Kitzbühel has a free guided hillwalking programme to get you exploring its 1,000km of walking paths. Join their experienced guides and see the best spots of the area on trails for all abilities.
You’re close to all the action at the Jägerwirt – it’s a few minutes’ walk into the historic town centre and a little further to the gondolas. The friendly family-run hotel has an authentic Austrian feel and an indoor poor and sauna.
