ITV’s popular show The Durrells is back for a second series. And this series promises more chaos and drama for the famous family, plus, of course, more screen time of the stunning location. It’s filmed in our very own resort and A la Carte hotel, here’s how to see it for yourself…
What’s The Durrells all about?
The series is a bit like Downton Abbey, but set in the sunnier climes of Corfu. It tells the story of a young Gerald Durrell and his family who swap life in London for intrepid adventures on the pretty Greek isle. If you haven’t heard of Gerald – he’s the one who wrote ‘My Family And Other Animals’ based on his idyllic childhood in Corfu.
“My childhood in Corfu shaped my life. If I had the craft of Merlin, I would give every child the gift of my childhood.”
Series one was all about the family adjusting to their new home and collecting a menagerie of unique pets. Series two sees the clan struggling through hard times, adopting even more animals and getting embroiled in scandal.
Who’s in it?
British TV fave Keeley Hawes plays Gerard’s mum Louisa Durrell. It also stars Josh O’Connor (Ripper Street, Peaky Blinders), Daisy Waterstone (Silent Witness) and Milo Parker (Mr Holmes, Ghosthunters). The script was written by Simon Nye of Men Behaving Badly and Doctor Who fame, so we reckon it’ll be a winner.
Where did they film it?
Corfu town and the rugged peaks and vineyards where Gerald adopted his pets. The family moved to various villas around Corfu Town in the regions of Perama, Kontokali, and Criseda. You can visit the White House for yourself, which has now been turned into a hotel and restaurant, and snorkel in the waters around the Pink Villa where Gerald found octopuses, starfish, sea urchins and crabs.
Where did the cast stay?
The stars of the show stayed at a hotel from our very own A la Carte collection – The Corfu Imperial Luxury Resort. The 5-star hotel is set on its own private peninsula with four Blue Flag beaches to choose from, plus a huge pool and 4 restaurants. It’s in prime position for exploring Corfu Town and all the main sites featured in the series.
