Bring your senses to life
At TUI SENSATORI we’re here to inspire creativity. We make it our mission to fuel your senses bringing them to life. This year, we’re working with a collective of extra-creative people. When they use one of their senses, it triggers an automatic experience in one of their other senses, which they channel into their creativity. We call them our ‘Sensorialists’.
Synaesthesia
syn·aes·the·sia (sĭn'ĭs-thē'zh) noun
A condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces the visualisation of a colour.
The TUI synaesthesia quiz
Take our TUI Sensorialist quiz and find out if you have any surprising connections between your senses. Some of the questions might seem a little odd, but that’s OK. Trust your senses and answer with your instincts. At the end of the quiz, you'll have the opportunity to enter your details for a chance to win an exclusive all-inclusive 7 night holiday to the brand new TUI SENSATORI resort Atlantica Rhodes.
Imagine yourself in the tropics eating a banana. Would you say bananas are fast or slow?
There are parasols on the beach, one small and the other big. Which parasol would you call 'MIL' and which 'MAL'?
An artist made the following five images in order to match the five basic tastes:
This dish is called the four tastes. But which taste goes with which coloured spoon?
Is the sound you would associate with the smell of pineapple higher or lower than that you would associate with the smell of honey?
Which texture would you associate with the taste of tropical ginger?
Are lemons fast or slow?
When you watch this clip, can you hear the waves crashing?

Scents evoke a strong emotional reaction in me and can transport me to a different place
Fuelling your senses…
Your results show:
High awareness of the surprising connections between your senses. Some awareness of the surprising connections between your senses. Low awareness of the surprising connections between your senses.
These surprising connections can often be an enabler for inspiration and help ideas flow in different ways. Often people with surprising connections between their senses are very creative – many are musicians, artists and designers. Did you know that Kanye West, Pharell Williams, Heston Blumenthal amongst many others have different ways in which their senses help inspire their creativity?
Below are the senses you showed high signs of surprising connections for:
Although your results do not show a high level of surprising connections between your senses, everyone can unlock their senses further with a few simple techniques; why not think about shapes you attach to tastes, or the colours you think of when you smell something. Next time you have a refreshing drink, try and imagine a piece of music that would go well together with it, and one that would be completely wrong.
What you need:
3 jars | 3 different spices | Tape
The workout:
Simply pop the three different spices into their own jar, tape up the spice jars and try to recognise what the scent is based on smell alone…
How it works:
Initially, all that most people can say is that what’s in the jar smells familiar, and perhaps that what they are smelling seems edible rather than inedible. However, after only a small amount of practice, many people find that they rapidly become much better at identifying smells, and soon thereafter, they are able to start pulling apart the individual aromas in the mix.

TUI SENSATORI has enlisted the help of cognitive neuroscientist and renowned sensory psychologist Professor Charles Spence, who accompanied and studied the TUI Sensorialists throughout their TUI SENSATORI experience.
In studying Philippa Stanton and Dawn Goldworm during their sensorial journeys, Professor Charles Spence developed commentary and insights on synaesthesia, while also detailing how people can engage with and learn to use their sensory stimuli to re-live their holidays.

Discover the TUI sensorialists
Introducing the TUI Sensorialists. Each of them possesses the ability known as ‘synaesthesia’, where senses get cross-wired. Some ‘see’ sounds, others ‘smell’ colours. The TUI Sensorialists turn this ability into talent, as they use their sensory experience in their creative works. Each of our Sensorialists will live and breathe the world of TUI SENSATORI, creating a personal expression of that experience.
Philippa Stanton
Artist
Philippa was invited to embrace her senses at one of our five-star luxury TUI SENSATORI resorts, and represent that in a unique and visual way. Philippa interpreted her sensory experiences in the form of three beautiful paintings, bringing to life the sound, taste, and smell of a TUI SENSATORI holiday.
Dawn Goldworm
Olfactive expert
TUI SENSATORI, teamed up with Dawn Goldworm, whose unique talent allows her to see and feel scents. As an esteemed olfactive expert, she has used her talent to take an extraordinary approach to creating something very special and bespoke for TUI SENSATORI. Keep an eye on the site next month to see our exciting news and hear more from Dawn!
