Appearance-wise, Volkach is the poster child for authentic German towns. The hamlet’s filled with colourful half-timbered houses and pretty bite-sized parks. The Market Square’s the first stop for most visitors – it’s where you’ll find a lot of the town’s shops and restaurants. Everything from Asian eateries and Bavarian bistros to souvenir shops and supermarkets are packed around the square’s statue-topped water fountain. The other must-see spot in Volkach is the Baroque Barn Museum. This 400-year-old storehouse has been converted into a heritage museum, with displays featuring centuries-old farming equipment, pottery and swords. If scenic hikes are more your style, Volkach’s backed by a border of emerald-green hillsides. They’re sprinkled with easy-going walking routes that look out over the River Main.
Volkach’s town centre has all the hallmarks of a peaceful German hamlet – think half-timbered houses, cobbled public squares and bar-lined alleys. On this 90-minute guided walking tour, you’ll see the best of it, plus some of the town’s most-popular landmarks. Get ready to learn about the history of the town, which has been on the map since 906 AD. In the town centre, you’ll head to Market Square, which is home to everything from Bavarian bistros to souvenir shops. Make sure you snap a picture of its postcard-worthy water fountain while you’re there. Next, you’ll visit the Baroque Barn Museum. It’s in a secular building that was constructed in 1719, making it one of the oldest structures in Volkach. You’ll have a chance to walk around its pottery collections, Medieval swords and historic models of the town.
