You can combine sightseeing with beer tasting today. Utrecht’s city centre is relatively compact, so you’ll be whisked on a short tour of its top sights. Then you’ll make a beeline for the 800-year-old Oudegracht canal – famous for its historic wharf cellars. Lots of these storage warehouses have since been converted into cosy houses, cafés or even breweries – one of which we’ll visit today. Stadskasteel Oudaen is a castle dating back to the Middle Ages and it’s got a brewery squirreled away in its cellar. Around 75,000 litres of beer are brewed here every year. And you can walk among the huge copper kettles and kegs on a guided tour. After, you’ll get to sample some of the beer produced in the vaults – from white beer to pilsner or bock. Then you can explore on your own with an hour of free time, before heading back to the ship.
