Utrecht is up there with Venice and Bruges as one of the most beautiful canal cities in the world. Today, you’ll set off on a guided walk around this scaled-down version of Amsterdam. Unsurprisingly, you’ll start out in the canal area, where you can see the centuries-old wharves and wharf cellars that the city’s famous for. Nearby, you’ll also pass St Martin’s Cathedral, Medieval churches and the first department store in the Netherlands, Winkel van Sinkel. These days, this giant building houses a grand restaurant during the day and a nightclub after dark. You’ll also swing by the Pope’s House – the former home of Pope Adrianus VI and the city’s second-oldest building. You’ll stroll through the shopping district and on to the museum district, where six museums are spread between the Medieval houses, hidden courtyards and centuries-old monasteries.
