YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

The UK government’s traffic light system is made up of green, amber and red destinations. The colour category a country falls into defines the testing, self-isolation or quarantine requirements for when you re-enter the UK after travelling. Just so you know, this traffic light system is for re-entry into the UK only – there are likely to also be separate entry requirements set by the country you’re travelling to – and we will not travel to any destinations on the red list. For more information on the traffic light system, visit our entry requirements page.

If you’re travelling to an amber list country , you’re required to take an antigen (rapid flow) test or a PCR test before you return to the UK and two PCR tests when you get home. If you’re returning to Scotland or Wales, your PCR tests should be purchased through CTM. You’ll also be required to self-isolate at home for 10 days, unless you opt in to the Test to Release scheme – only available if you live in England. If you won’t be able to self-isolate on your return home, you’ll be able to change your booking to another date or destination fee-free, up to 14 days before your departure date. If your destination changes from the green to the amber colour category within 14 days of your departure date, you’ll also be able to change your booking fee-free. This applies for package holidays, flight-only and accommodation-only bookings. Just so you know, there may also be separate entry requirements set by the country you’re travelling to.

If you’re fully vaccinated and a resident of England, travelling to an amber list country, you’re required to take an antigen (rapid flow) test or a PCR test before you return to the UK and one PCR test when you get home. You won’t be required to self-isolate at home for 10 days. The same rules apply for those under the age of 18 travelling with a fully vaccinated adult. If you’re not fully vaccinated and a resident of England, or if you’re a resident of Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, and you’re travelling to an amber list country, you’re required to take an antigen (rapid flow) test or a PCR test before you return to the UK and two PCR tests when you get home. If you’re returning to Scotland or Wales, your PCR tests should be purchased through CTM. You’ll also be required to self-isolate at home for 10 days.

We will only travel to a country on the UK traffic light system’s amber list if:

  • The country’s borders are open
  • The advice from the FCDO is not against all but essential travel there
  • There are no requirements for quarantine on arrival where you can’t forgo this quarantine period by providing evidence of a negative COVID-19 test or of being fully vaccinated

We’re not travelling to any countries on the red list. If the destination you’re due to travel to is on the red list, we’ll cancel your holiday and give you the option to change your booking fee-free to another destination or date or request a full refund.

If you’re due to travel to a red list destination after 6 June and we haven’t yet cancelled your booking, you can wait to see if the country changes colour category.  Or, you can change your booking fee-free up to 14 days before your travel date, for holidays departing on or before 31 October 2021. If your destination changes to the red list within 14 days of you being due to travel, you will be able to change your booking fee-free or request a full refund.

You’re fully vaccinated from 14 days after you have your second dose of a government-approved vaccine.

If you live in England and have been fully vaccinated, you will be able to demonstrate your COVID-19 vaccination status through the NHS app. Visit the government’s info page on demonstrating your COVID-19 vaccination status for more info.

If you don’t have a smartphone, you can call the NHS Helpline on 119 and ask for a letter to be posted to you – you must do this at least five working days after your second vaccination. Make sure you allow seven days for the letter to be received.

You’re fully vaccinated from 14 days after you have your second dose of a government-approved vaccine.

We’re keeping a close eye on the destinations on the green and amber lists and assessing what the holiday experience will be like for you once you’re there. If we know about something that will have a major impact on your holiday experience – like if a destination is asking you to quarantine on arrival, even if the UK government is not asking you to do this on your return – we won’t take you there and will offer you the chance to change your holiday to a different date or destination or request a full refund. If you have a flight-only or accommodation-only booking, you’ll receive an automatic refund with 14 days of receiving your cancellation email.

See our Coronavirus FAQs for the latest information on holiday cancellations.
