Playa Hermosa holidays fall firmly into the relaxing category – cue a leggy beach, calm waters and a laidback atmosphere.
Beautiful beach
This isn’t just an attention-grabbing headline – it’s literally what Playa Hermosa translates to in English, and the name’s pretty apt. The beach here is a two-kilometre stretch of grey sand that’s backed up by tropical forest, which helps keep it out of sight from the tourist throngs. This family-friendly spot rarely gets overcrowded, and to top things off, it’s been awarded a Blue Flag, as well.
A tranquil town
It’s not just the beach that flies under the radar here – the town’s pretty understated, too. There are plenty of restaurants dotted around, and lots of hotels and holiday homes, but they’re mostly on the low-key side. Head down to the beach if you fancy dinner or drinks with a view – there are a handful of restaurants that make the most of the town’s coastal plot.
Watersports and gentle waters
Playa Hermosa sits in a cove, which means the waters around here are calm and ideal for swimming. And while the lack of big waves means surfing’s a no-no, it does lend itself to some more laidback watersports, like kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkelling. You’ll find plenty of places along the beach that hire equipment out, while chartered fishing trips are popular around here, too.
National park daytrips
If you fancy venturing out of town for the day, there are a few national parks within a 90-minute drive, and they all offer something a little different. Take Las Baulas for example – it’s right on the coast and is the go-to place to see the nesting spots of leatherback sea turtles Or, head inland to Rincon de la Vieja if you fancy seeing an active volcano and walking trails scattered with hot springs and waterfalls. You can even go horse riding through the park if you’re feeling adventurous.
