Good All Rounder
We visited in October 17 for 1 week and overall we really enjoyed our stay.The hotels location gives you the best of everything being right on the beach but just a short walk into town.The negatives I would have for the hotel are that it is starting to look abit tired in places and also the cost of drinks/food are very expensive.The only other thing missing is air conditioning in the main part of the hotel which I am sure is extremely hot during the summer months. We really enjoyed our time in this hotel and Alvor itself.More

Another enjoyable stay
My second trip and my wife's fifth to the Pestana Dom Joao II and we weren't disappointed. The hotel still maintains a good standard of rooms, service, food, amenities etc. Set in large secure grounds which boast a 3M deep pool; kiddies pool and play area; small volleyball court; gym; large pleasant gardens; a crazy golf course; an indoor pool with sauna. The hotel has both indoor and outdoor restaurants and both breakfast and dinner are on a buffet basis with a tremendous selection available. Lunch is from a set "bar type" menu. Staff are excellent and make you feel relaxed and at home. The beach is just 100m outside of the secured grounds and the boardwalks take you along the coast and around the marsh area for several miles. Alvor is less than a 15 minute stroll away and a free (hotel) bus service will drop you in Portimoa and allow you about 4 hours to look around. If golfing is your thing then the hotel has all the right connections for you including transport. Just want to relax and have a few spa treatments ... they've got that covered as well. Hopefully we will be back there next year for a break and maybe look into one of the nice looking apartments we viewed. Oh ... and no need to just take our word for this hotel we met up with 2 groups of people who we met last year and one group was already planning for a return next year!More

Golf Trip 2017
I took a group of 23 people , 16 golfers & 7 non golfers to this hotel from 28th Sept to 7th Oct . In my dealings with the staff prior to our visit I found them courteous and accomadating in all our dealings . From the time we arrived to our time of departure all the staff of this hotel were efficient , courteous and helpful in all aspects of our stay . All of my group had nothing but the highest of praise for this hotel . Suffice to say we will be back .More

Unhappy
Needs updating, more management control in dining room , to make sure hot food,e.g breakfast never any fried eggs ready then someone put six in fryer at a time so big queue formed if you asked for omelette took about ten minutes only did one at a time but pancakes were kept being done and piling up and many times burnt. The staff should all know if you have a accident book not just management .More

High quality hotel
We stayed at the Pestana Dom Joao in Alvor for ten enjoyable nights in September. We had a newly refurbished Villa in the grounds of the hotel which had two boule bedrooms thre bathrooms, a kitchen and loung dinning area. The food in the hotel was excellent with buffet breakfast and dinner. An excellent four star hotel.More
