Herceg Novi holidays
Jump to sections
Holidays to Herceg Novi have everything from historical fortresses and seaside dining to boat rides and mountain hikes.
Explore fortresses and beaches
Herceg Novi’s a postcard-ready town at the foot of Mount Orjen, on the coast of Montenegro. You’ll find pomegranate plants and kiwi trees in the streets, and it has a scattering of pebbly beaches lining the seafront. In the old town, you can eye up lots of well-preserved architecture, including the ancient Fort Mare. This fortress dates back to the 13th century, but remarkably, it’s still used today – if you’re lucky, you might even be able to catch a concert or an open-air cinema screening here. Back down by the water, the harbour’s alive with bobbing boats and waterside food and drink joints – it offers up a great spot for seafood dinners as the sun sets.
Out on the water
Herceg Novi’s right by the water, on the edge of the Bay of Kotor. Naturally, there are loads of watersports and boat trips on the cards. Two spots that stand out from the crowd are the Blue Cave and Mamula Island. The Blue Cave is a natural formation, filled with water that glows an electric blue – it’s all thanks to a small stream of sunlight entering the grotto and reflecting off the limestone walls. You might even spy some fish darting around beneath your boat if you’re eagle-eyed. If you sail over to the small and circular Mamula Island, you’ll get to explore an ancient fortress built in the mid-1800s on a registered UNESCO World Heritage site.
Countryside walks
If you like to walk on your holidays, Herceg Novi has plenty of routes up its sleeve, with some stellar countryside views to take in along the way. There’s a fistful of challenging options, but a lot of the popular walking routes are fairly gentle, so you can get in on the action even if you’re not an avid rambler. The landscapes you stroll through are peppered with olive trees, and the cobblestone walls and rocky hillsides are a stark contrast to the distant blue waters of the Adriatic Sea. Be sure to bring your camera along for the hike – there'll be plenty of photo stops en route.
Time for wine
In the countryside surrounding Herceg Novi, you’ll find a scattering of wineries, some with vineyards overlooking the sea. And if you’re into your wine, a tasting trip is a must. Picture it now – an afternoon sipping samples of full-bodied reds and sweet, crisp sauvignons while you soak up some sun. A popular spot on this front is Savina, which sits on a pretty hillside, right by an old monastery. When you visit, you can learn about how the drink’s made, and see the ingredients go from branch to bottle. Plus, you’ll get hand-picked nibbles that pair perfectly with the different wines.
