We have just returned from an excellent 2 week holiday staying half board at this hotel. We had 2 rooms, room 215 which had an excellent view of Vesuvius and room 104 which was at the back of the hotel and had views of olive and other trees. The rooms were kept spotlessly clean by the hard working maids and had plenty of storage space and also included a TV, hairdryer, safety deposit box, air conditioning and a mini bar if you wanted to use it. The balcony for room 104 was double the size of that for room 215. The buffet breakfast was great. The choice included, juice, breads, toast, cakes, cheese/ham slices, cereals, sausage, bacon, scrambled and hard boiled eggs, fruit and pancakes made from a pancake machine (our favourite), tea and coffee. The evening meal was chosen in the morning and you had a choice of 4 starters, 4 mains and either ice cream, fruit or dessert of the day. There is a Gala evening once a week. Our daughter is vegetarian and if there wasn’t something on the menu that took her fancy the waiter would offer her other choices. All the waiters, bar and reception staff were friendly and attentive and helped to make an enjoyable holiday. They are happy to talk and give advice and work hard to ensure everything runs smoothly. There are plenty of sunbeds available either around the pool or on a couple of terraces and especially during our second week they weren’t being reserved by people who turn up later in the day. The patio areas are well kept with pots of plants and trees all well looked after. There is a busy junction outside the hotel that does make some noise, but it is quite fascinating to watch how the Italian drivers cope with it especially the mopeds. We walked into and back from Sorrento many times and it took us 15 minutes. Part of the way there is no pavement, but the traffic always seemed aware of the pedestrians. Even with large coaches going by we never felt worried by the traffic, and we walked it in the dark too! The short walk into town offers lovely views over the bay of Naples. We paid our bar bill every few days to avoid a large bill at the end of our stay. At times we ate at the bar at lunchtime. A good selection, the cost goes on your bar bill. Tourist tax also has to be paid, although there were 4 of us for 2 weeks this only came to €21 as under 18s don’t pay. Overall this is an excellent 3 star hotel that was a great base from which to explore the area. We would have no hesitation in going back to The Hotel Metropole.

First the positives! The management and staff are lovely and very helpful indeed. Hotel is very clean and modern with excellent air con. Problem is that the hotel sits on a major junction of the main coast road into Sorrento. Accidents are common place and there is a lot of honking of horns and ambulance sirens. There is no sidewalk or pavement either - so a no no for the infirm or small children. You can ask for a room at the back over looking the garden (scrub land) which will give you a relatively quiet night.
Better than we thought

I was a little dubious after reading some of the reviews, but don't be. We were in room 211 with the best view over the bay and of Vesuvius. The photos don't do it justice. Rooms - a good size with great air con, plenty of storage and spotlessly clean. Some say the decor is old fashioned, it's traditional and I tell you what, those tiled floors take no prisoners cleanliness wise. Talking of which, it's spotless. If I could have taken those cleaning ladies home with me, I would have done! I would have liked a brighter bathroom for putting make up on but that's me personally. Traditionalwooden shutters at the doors keep the room quiet at night and cool in the day. There is a balcony and the plastic seats are a little tired but they do the job when you're looking out over the bay. Breakfast - it's not the hugest choice but there is everything you need. Cured meats, scrambled egg, cheeses, juices, pastries and the freshest fruit. We did stay for dinner one night and it was very tasty. Pool area - a lovely area, terrace style. Shame on you brits for reserving sun beds and not using them (it was mainly brits when we stayed)! Again, a marvellous view over the bay and shade if you needed it. Walk down the terrace to the bar below and they will bring your drink up to you. And one good thing about being above the town, was the heat was less intense at the hotel and there was a gentle breeze, unlike the main town. And now the road - yes it is on a main road. Sorrento is a big town (it may even be a city technically) but walking down, stick to the right and then cross to walk in the direction of traffic and then a little down the road, there is a pavement. I never felt unsafe. And you will get the best view ever as you walk. I'm home now and miss the view, I never tired of it and it walks off alll the pasta. It's a 15 minute walk to the town centre and another 10 minutes from there to Piazza Tasso. There's a bus stop outside the hotel if you want the bus to Sorrento centre anyway. Staff - friendly but not in your face and very helpful. They recommended Massa Lubrense, a 10 minute bus away, which was beautiful and so quiet. So, don't be put off by the reviews, enjoy the walk with the best views ever and your escape from the heat of the town

Second visit to this little gem of an hotel. I would personally give this friendly hotel 6 stars if I could! Nothing is to much trouble for the wonderful staff. Food is hot and tasty, served with a smile everyday, and night. Choice a little limited but made up for by the speed and efficiency of delivery to the table. Renovation of the dining area now complete and reflects the modern look and feel of reception. Room was large, air conditioned and comfortable. Busy road is great for people watching and viewing the bay of Naples shipping with a fantastic view of Vesuvius. Fully double glazed patio windows, lead out to a private balcony, keeping the room quiet when closed. Found our home from home in Sorrento.

Lovely hotel couldn't fault anything only problem is the road outside until you reach the Pavement quite a scary walk .only cristisiam of the hotel would be that the bar aerea feels and looks more like a cafe than a bar .
