Holidays to Vasiliki combine a world-class windsurfing spot with a traditional village and harbour.
The fishing village of Vasiliki has a seaside perch in the south of Lefkas. In the summer months it doubles as a haven for windsurfers, thanks to its yawning bay and spot-on weather conditions. The lively village centre sits in the eastern corner of the bay, kicking off a series of pebble, shingle and sand beaches backed by tavernas. Ferries pootle in and out of the harbour, too, headed for Kefalonia.
Vasiliki has made a name for itself as a windsurfing hotspot. And the activities don’t stop there – sailing, scuba diving and sea kayaking also jump-start from its watersports centres. And Agiofilli, one of the best beaches in Lefkas, is just around the corner. Visitors flock here for its bright blue waters and dramatic headland backdrop. The beach is a 40-minute trek from the village, so it’s easiest to hop in a water taxi from the harbour.
The main fishing village is a muddle of pavement cafés, ice-cream parlours, and surf shops. In the harbour, meanwhile, working boats bob alongside sports yachts. Tavernas overlook the beaches bracing the town, serving up al fresco terraces that sidle up to the sea. After an activity-packed day, evenings usually go one of two ways – sipping cocktails in a lounge bar or listening to a live band at a beachfront taverna.
Ferries mosey between Vasiliki and the neighbouring island of Kefalonia. Fiskardo is a popular daytrip destination – its smart harbour and postcard-perfect town go down well with the yachting crowd. On Sundays, you can hop on a service to Sami, a working fishing village that starred in the Hollywood blockbuster, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.
