Good hotel - lovely staff
Myself and hubby wanted to get away for a week late Sept. Found a deal with Thomson to this hotel. Hotel itself is well appointed; good facilities, clean rooms, modern bathrooms and friendly staff. The pergola restaurant by the pool has very reasonably priced Greek food and is great for Greek salads, tzaziki, souvlaki, pitta etc. By way of evening entertainment there is not a lot of it. Twice in the week by the pool bar there was a man singing and playing a piano/synthesiser for an hour or so (not my cup of tea but I’m sure others enjoyed it). And mid week they hired in a small group of greek dancers for about a 40 min stint (very entertaining). There is an outside cinema at the hotel - blankets provided at reception if needed, which plays various Greek related/themed films (Big fat Greek wedding, Shirley Valentine, Captain Corelli’s mandolin etc..) this is a nice touch and can fill the time in the evening after dinner (TIP: wear your mosquito spray in the cinema). Hotel is located outside of Lixouri, about a 7-8 min walk from Xi beach. Beach has red sand and famous for having clay nearby that you are supposed to rub on your body, let it bake on you in the sun, run into the sea to wash off clay and horrid old dead skin; revealing soft skin after (TIP: do this at beginning of holiday so as not to remove your tan). We ventured into Argostolli mid week, early morning on the local bus that stops outside the hotel; and were delighted to see the turtles swimming along the water front by the fisherman. I was surprised at how large the turtles were and the water is pretty clear so they were very visible swimming in and out between the fishing boats. Just beautiful! Before I forget. There’s a games room hidden in the basement of the hotel with pool tables, table football, air hockey etc. I think the hotel management could do with moving some of these games up stairs under cover by the pool or something for some entertainment outside otherwise you’ll miss it.More
The resort was recommended to us by some Greek friends from Athens who had visited the previous year and were extremely satisfied. We booked directly and stayed during the last week of September before the hotel closed for the winter. We arranged a taxi collection from the airport via the hotel who sent the excellent driver Makos who then drove us on the beautiful journey to the resort which is located in the South of the Paliki peninsular near XI beach. First impressions of the resort were extremely positive. The hotel is clearly very modern being 9 years old and extremely well built and designed. The gardens are exquisite and well maintained. The welcome at the reception was very hospitable, with a welcome drink and thorough explanation of the room location and facilities. The reception area is beautiful and adorned with excellent art. We were then taken in a golf buggy to our room. The room was a standard room but spacious, well equipped and comfortable with nice shower bath (with nice Greek shampoos etc) air conditioning, bed , flat screen TV and balcony. Had there been coffee making facilities in the room as in other hotels of this standard we would probably have made more use of the balcony. The room was also very well sound proofed and we heard nothing of the neighbours even with the balcony door open at night. The standard of housekeeping, cleanliness and furnishings was very high and of 5 star standard. Food served for breakfast and the evening meal was excellent and is highly varied from day to day. The restaurant is also extremely well managed. Waiter Makis Antonelatos was outstanding as well as a very good waitress from Serres whose name I have also forgotten. The head chef (from Chania in Crete - sorry I have forgotten his name too) was always present and watching and managing what was happening around the buffet as well as the maître d'hôtel. Having lived previously in Greece I can confirm that much of the food was just like 'home cooked' Greek food. Food was themed every evening with pasta and BBQ for example but with staples which were always available . Pastries, bread and desserts were all outstanding and clearly produced by very skilled chefs. The fresh fruit and vegetables were also extremely tasty. The wine list was excellent including the very drinkable local Robola white wine and other award winning wines from other parts of Greece. La Pergola which was open during the day imitates successfully a taverna and offers a limited selection of 'street food' such as chicken or pork gyros or Cheese saganaki. Again Makis made us very welcome there too. Makis typified the 'can do ' attitude of all the staff we encountered. Most seemed to be regular employees - both local and from other parts of Greece. We were impressed with the attitude and professionalism of the staff as well as their immaculate personal appearance. The only negative point was the presence of cats which were allowed to wander around the restaurant which we felt to be most unhygienic. The staff did make efforts to 'shoo' them but they were encouraged in by many of the guests who were feeding them. The spa was outstanding. The free 15 minute spa treatment offered on arrival was very good indeed and was a great promotion for the services on offer there. We opted for the unique 70 minute Cretan massage which was excellent and good value. The outdoor cinema which seems to be equipped with comfortable chairs now (compared to some previous reviews which talked of plastic garden furniture) and great screen was a great venue with very relevant Greek themed films such as 'Captain Correlli's mandolin' or my 'Big Fat Greek Wedding' In the bar there was music every evening with the highlight being the Greek Evening which was outstanding with local dancers encouraging audience participation. The cocktails were of a very good standard and good value during the two happy hours before and after dinner. The hotel is 200m from the beautiful XI beach where there are several bars and restaurants as well as a well stocked mini market where we bought water. The nearby town of Lixouri is only 10 minutes away either by a fixed €10 taxi ride (called by the hotel) or by the local KTEL bus for €1.80 which arrived like clockwork at 09.15 and 11.45 at the hotel entrance. The town itself is very friendly with nice shops and bars. The ferry to Argostoli leaves every 30 minutes from Lixouri and the crossing is only 20 Minutes with beautiful views all the way. At €2.80 it is a great value 'mini cruise'. The bay is well protected and even in high winds the sea remains smooth. Argostoli is a great town to visit with a beautiful promenade, square and pedestrian street. Near the Drapano bridge some loggerhead turtles could be easily seen. We opted for a taxi tour of of the island at the going local hourly rate with Makos who was an excellent driver and safe on the often windy roads. Assos and Fiskardo are stunning and well worth the visit as well as the return journey via Aghia Efemia giving outstanding views of Ithaki, Lefkadha and Sterea Elladha in the distance. Although we did not wish to drive ourselves the local car hire business next door had some good offers on reasonable terms we understood from other guests. We would highly recommend this resort and intend to return one day. We understand that over the next two years the hotel will double in size and work begins this October. Hopefully this addition will enhance the hotel still further. More
Excellent hotel, good food, fantastic staff, clean and a few minutes walk away from beautiful XI beach. We were there on half board base. Be aware drinks at dinner are not included. You can buy a bottle and use for next night. The car hire company next to hotel has amazing offers and staff there are so cool and easy going. More

A Slice of Heaven That Will be Hard to Beat
We loved the Apollonion so much I’ve joined Trip Advisor to leave a review! Over the past few years we’ve stuck to self catering, driving holidays after some disappointing experiences with packages, so it was with a degree of trepidation that we booked this holiday. The Apollonion converted us so much that we’re now worried nowhere else will compare favourably. The first thing I need to mention is the staff – they seemingly working 24/7 but never failed to smile, have fun and be helpful. Special mentions to Amarida, Ioanna and Elinor (apologies for any spelling inaccuracies) but the whole team were wonderful. Our 5 year old was in tears saying goodbye to them. Transit from the airport was under an hour, including a ferry journey (and we got to see turtles from the ferry, a great sight to welcome us to Kefalonia.) From the moment of arrival it was clear this was going to be a wonderful stay. Our room was ready upon arrival and we were given complementary drinks whilst completing check-in. The room was immaculately kept, beds a little hard for our taste but this is subjective and we slept well. We were at the back of the resort (room 351) but the layout is such that everything is within a couple of minutes stroll, and yet feels spread out. The grounds and all facilities well cared for and beautifully presented. The art positioned around the site (and the art museum) gave a real feeling of quality to the hotel. The pool area was large enough that the pool never felt too full (even with plenty of floats in there) and there was never any problem with getting enough loungers together for all of us, whatever time we arrived (including with shade for the little ‘un) and was a very peaceful area to sit and read, sunbathe or take a dip. For a change of scene, the beach was 5 minutes walk down the road, with a shade and 2 loungers costing 6 euro to rent for the day. We were given complimentary 15 minute massages upon arrival and these were so good we went back for more – a Cretan massage earlier in the holiday and then a neck, shoulder and back massage before we left. I’m not exaggerating to say my back feels 10 years younger. Internet is free and worked well throughout the resort. Food was really good, always fresh and being replaced throughout service. Each day had some common staples – Greek salads and breads for example – but always a rotation on other salads, vegetables and meat dishes. A few ‘theme’ nights but as every night changed anyway these weren’t crucial to vary the meals. Only slight frustration was the queues for the coffee machines in the morning – but on holiday, there’s no rush! The afternoon snack bar provided good food cooked to order, very tasty and competitively priced. Drink prices both there, in the restaurant and at the pool bar were comparable with external bars, it was only really wines that felt expensive. Happy hour and the daily cocktail offer helped keep costs down. Xi Beach is a quiet area, it is quite remote and with not much entertainment on this may not appeal to people wanting a wilder nightlife. But we wanted peaceful relaxation and the Apollonion was the absolutely perfect location for that. We are truly torn as to whether to go and explore another corner of the world or to head back to a hotel that gave us such a wonderful holiday. Thank you to everyone at the hotel – your sublime service in your wonderful resort on your beautiful island have given us happy memories that will last a lifetime.More
Lovely hotel, average restaurant
We stayed for 2 weeks half board with our children 6&9. We had a great time. In spite of there being no kids' club, there were plenty of other children and the children we're sufficiently entertained. We had a deluxe duplex with swim up pool. The room was excellent; modern and clean with plenty of space, including 2 bathrooms. The terrace was great and we enjoyed the swim up pool. This wasn't connected to the main pool, so we also spent time by the main pool, which was good with plenty of loungers even in August. The reception and cleaning staff were very good. Unfortunately the restaurant lets the rest of the hotel down. Most people seemed to be 1/2 board and there are few other options if you don't have a car. The food is tasty and varied if a little repetitive but the organisation of the restaurant needs improving. If a table is not available you have to stand around in the middle of the restaurant and ask a member of staff to make up a clean table for you. I have never experienced this before. Ordering a drink to enjoy with your meal was unsatisfactory. Wine was only available by the bottle, so if you wanted a glass, they suggested you take the bottle back to you room and bring it back the following night! You were often left with dirty plates. The restaurant felt understaffed. The snack bar has a limited menu but is reasonably priced, however due to the multiple wasp nests in the pergola over the snack bar, lunch was not a relaxing experience. The outdoor cinema is a nice touch. It takes 5 minutes to walk to the beach which is very nice with sun loungers for hire. The sea is generally calm and shallow enough for children to play safely. There are several reasonable beach bars. Kefalonia is a lovely island and I would recommend for anyone to go there. The Apollonion is a great option as long as you don't have high expectations of dining or are prepared to travel for dinner. More
