This smart-looking hotel scores a double coup – it sits on the beach and has a great pool scene, too.
The Hotel Riu Helios Bay stretches out alongside a sandy beach, so it’s ideal in terms of location. What’s more, it’s less than a 5-minute walk from the pretty town of Obzor.
With whitewashed walls, arched balconies and a terracotta roof, this place is classically good-looking. And in terms of accommodation, plush carpets and mahogany furniture stand out against cream walls. It's had a full refurb for May 2017, with a refresh to all rooms, a bigger main restaurant and lobby area, and a brand new karaoke bar.

This hotel surpassed our expectations. Opened our door for the first time and it had the wow factor. Started with the view from our balcony and the 8’ bed which was every bit as comfortable as our one at home. Food was plentiful and well cooked and prepared. Wine was really nice and available on tap.Staff were cheerful and helpful everywhere that we went. Lounge area in our room was an extra we hadn’t expected.More

All in all not bad
Room was really nice overlooking the beach nice and spacious cleaned well ,hotel all in all pretty good just a couple of minor niggles was disappointed to have to pay 40 lev per week for the safe in the room which I consider a little steep for something not much bigger than a shoe box also it was the old style safe key operated, so you needed to keep the key with you.dining room a bit of a let down staffed mainly by very young people who didn't seem interested in their customers spent most of their time practising making flowers or swans in the napkins! lots of the food was cold /under cooked, the Asian restaurant was quite a disgrace floor sticky in places slippy in others on our visit we tried the spring rolls which had nothing in them ! so we left and went to the main restaurant. Pool nice but quite cold plenty of parasols, can imagine quite busy in high season.Bar staff pretty good in all bars we went to evening entertainment quite good all in all, the magic show was a revelation Tommy Cooper reborn! Would we return? Possibly but not for a main holiday was ideal as a cheeky weeks getawayMore

I felt obliged to write a review of the hotel after reading the 2 latest reviews just to give some balance. The hotel isn't aimed at the Sunny Beach market. It is a quiet hotel very much aimed at families and older holidaymakers. Obzor is quiet but we were there right at the end of the season so the lack of open shops and bars was only to be expected. From walking around Obzor, it looks pretty well set up for tourists during the season proper. There are lots of shops and bars around, the beach is lovely but you do have to pay for your sunbeds and umbrellas which will work out fairly pricey over the course of a week. Having said that, there is plenty of free beach very close to the hotel so you do have a choice. The hotel has been refurbished this year and it shows. The rooms are lovely with comfortable beds and walk in showers in the bathrooms. There is loads of wardrobe space and the balconies have chairs and a table on them. The public areas of the hotel are clean and bright, there is a lack of enough comfortable seating around the lobby bar which was a bit disappointing. The lobby bar is only open in the evening which meant that getting a coffee or any other drink during the day meant going down to the pool bar. That is fine on a nice day but was a bit of a pain if the weather wasn't great. The pool bar opens at 10 in the morning so if you want drinks prior to that, you have to use the restaurant. In my opinion, having the lobby bar open all day would be sensible and useful. The food wasn't as varied as other Riu hotels I have stayed in but it was all well cooked and there was plenty of it, it would have been good to have a wider variety of local cuisine every day and not just once a week. All the non branded drinks are free, but you will have to pay for branded stuff - Famous Grouse rather than the local whisky. The bar staff are extremely attentive and your next drink is ready before you are! They always seem to remember what you order as well which is a nice touch. The entertainment in the evening is so bad it's almost good! It's very dated and seemed haphazard but that could just be because it was the end of the season. The entertainment staff were always cheerful but were very young. We went to Obzor knowing that it was quiet and sleepy, we knew that the weather wasn't going to be amazing so we probably had different expectations of what we were going to get which meant that we weren't disappointed. All in all, it as exactly what we were after, a relaxing holiday with a lovely beach to walk along. Would I go back to this hotel? Absolutely but slightly earlier in the season to take full advantage of the Bulgarian summer.More
This is was the worst holiday I've ever been on
I never write reviews as I've always had such great experiences and fantastic holidays. BUT THIS ONE DESERVES A REVIEW. I understand you can't predict the weather but when you go book a holiday to then get told where you wanted to go was going to be cold, then the travel agent to tells you Bulgaria is lovely, sunny all the time, scenic, lots to go and do, 15/20 min walk from sunny beach and so on........ Got there yes the hotel was lovely, rooms great but there is where it stopped. The weather was ok for all of two days, it was cold, windy and rained the rest of the week, even had to spend more money on getting jumpers and trousers as was so cold. The food was the same all week it tasted awful, it was uncooked, pork was red, even the chips was not cooked. I've lost weight, was ill from the food all week. Everything was shutting and being packed away within two days of the holiday, there was no games or entertainment throughout the day and come evening time the entertainment was meant for kids and even if there was any I do think even they would find it just as terrible, Checked in at 4am on the Friday morning and then was kicked out on the following Friday at 12 in the after noon and had to wait in the lobby for 11 1/2 hours till the coach picked us up and also had to have an argument with the receptionist for a pillow and a towel to I could attest have some sleep and a shower before the 1 1/2 hour bus Journey to the airport which we got told was 30 to 40 mins. NEVER GOING THERE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!! More
