#YourBigDay – The Workshop
Our #YourBigDay competition for 2015 will give one lucky couple the chance to win their dream wedding in Mexico. From 600 applications, we narrowed it down to our top 16 – and then invited them to a workshop to battle it out for a place in the final 3. Here’s how they got on…
For the second year running, we’re giving a very lucky couple the chance to win their dream wedding. The big day will take place at a luxury Karisma hotel in Mexico, this October. The couple will get free flights, followed by 14 nights’ All Inclusive accommodation and their dream wedding in the sun. Eight of their family and friends will also join them – bagging free flights and 7 nights’ All Inclusive accommodation.
And the best bit? The couple won’t need to plan a thing, as we’re leaving the key decisions in the hands of our trusted Thomson Facebook community. They’ll choose the dress, the shoes and more, while the winners relax and look forward to saying “I do”. But before we get down to the finishing touches, we need to find the couple…
After poring over 600 applications, we selected our top 16 couples and invited them to the Putteridge Bury Conference Centre, on the outskirts of Luton, for a day-long workshop. We made them write poems, snap photos, craft collages and tell us their funny stories for the chance to make it to the final 3.
We wanted to know everything about our final 16, not just how they met. We grilled them on their proudest moments, their most embarrassing stories, their guilty pleasures and even their favourite films.
They began by telling us their proposal stories – the good, the bad and the ugly. These ranged from renting out an entire cinema to writing “will you marry me” in chocolate (and spelling it wrong), to an airport proposal with Haribo rings.
Once they were a bit more comfortable, they told us their guilty pleasures which included cross stitch, Jeremy Kyle, One Direction and eating chocolate in the bath. They were an eclectic bunch our couples…
We want our winners to be sharing their experiences across social media, so we tested our final 16 on their skills. Would they be a top Twitterer or a Facebook flop?
First we split the couples up and got them to write a blog post about each other – some wrote gushing poems, and some struggled for words (much to their partners’ dismay). Then we brought social media to life through the power of cardboard cut-outs and got our couples to take Instagram-worthy snaps of themselves in the conference centre’s grounds.
Arts & Crafts
Armed with a glue stick and some scissors, we got our final 16 to channel their inner child and make wedding moodboards using magazine pictures. Some had a fixed idea of what they wanted and others were a bit meh. The moodboards ranged from neat and minimalist to crowded, colourful and filled with drawings.
Either way, we learnt a lot about our couples…
The Final Stages
We gave our couples a score for each round and then pooled together our results and picked our final 3. Next Tuesday we’ll be announcing the 3 finalists – and it’ll be down to you to choose who gets their dream wedding.
