Avoid the pitfalls of packing for a cruise with our handy checklists of essentials…
Bikini, check. Suncream, check. Shorts and T-shirt, check. When it comes to packing for a holiday, we’ve got it all figured out by now. But if we’ve booked to go on a cruise, it seems to drive us into a blind panic… we have no idea what we’ll need. Will I look stupid sitting in a sundress at dinner when everyone else is decked out in ball-gowns? Will I be chilly? Or baking hot? Will I look like a complete cruise novice?!
There’s no need to get yourself in a pre-holiday tizzy. We’re here to help with a guide to the packing essentials – for a Caribbean and a Baltic cruise – so you’ll look like a seasoned pro:
1.Seafolly Byron kaftan – £35
A kaftan will be your most-worn item of clothing on a cruise – throw it on over your bikini and you’re good to go.
2. Craghoppers lightweight waterproof jacket – £25
It may be the sunny Caribbean but they still have occasional rain – don’t get caught out with this nifty light-weight waterproof.
3. Office Haviana flip-flops – £21.99
Cast aside those socks and set your toes free with these Haviana flip-flops – the original and the best. The rubber soles will also prevent any slips on board.
4. Planet ruffle front jersey dress – £99
Cruises are generally very relaxed when it comes to dress code, but the Captain’s Cocktail Party is an excuse to get a bit fancy in a hue-of-the-moment emerald frock. Simply add a pashmina for a moonlit stroll on deck. Men can wear anything from a tuxedo to a blazer and slacks.
5. Garnier Ambre Solaire clear protection spray SPF30 – £14.49
Make sure you’re more sun-kissed goddess than fried lobster with a generous coating of water-resistant protection spray. The essence of any holiday.
1. Warehouse mink jumper – £38
Stay warm in chilly climates with an oversized yet stylish jumper. We love this mink beauty from Warehouse.
2. Jack Wolfskin Queens coat – £170
You don’t want to miss the sensational scenery as you navigate the Baltic Sea, so don’t waste precious time staying warm inside. Bundle up in this snug-as-a-bug Jack Wolfskin coat.
3. Accessorize superslim umbrella – £12
You will never regret bringing an umbrella. Fact.
4. Oasis Eva bootcut jeans – £48
A wardrobe staple, you can’t beat a good pair of jeans. Dress them up or down, and they’ll keep out the brisk Baltic air.
5. Fat Face long sleeve T-shirt – £20
It’s all about the layers, so this super-soft long sleeve T-shirt is perfect for those tricky transitions between inside and out.
1. Nikon COOLPIX compact digital camera – £49.99
Whether you’re pottering around the quaint cobbled streets of Stockholm’s old town or basking on Barbados’ Carlisle Beach, you’ll want to capture the moment. COOLPIX are light and compact, and take fantastic photos.
2. Fossil coated shopper – £79
You’ll definitely need a bag to keep all your bits and bobs to hand… and since you’re at sea an’ all, better make it waterproof.
3. Wilkinson 10 coat hangers – £1
We know, you won’t end up wearing half of the clothes you’ve brought. But you might as well make sure they’re all crease-free. Just in case.
4. Fast Aid first aid kit – £10.72
You never know when you’ll need a plaster or a safety pin. Err on the side of caution.
5. Masterplug extension lead – £9.98
There’s nothing more frustrating than running out of plug sockets, so be prepared with 4 extra power points.
6. PG Tips 40 tea bags – £1.35
If you crave your home comforts, be sure to take along your favourite tea bags. We Brits do like our brews.
7. Olympus DPSI binoculars – £45.84
Did you see Helsinki’s stunning Russian Orthodox Uspenski Cathedral from the ship? No? Should have packed your binoculars.
