It’s National Cruise Month, so we’re taking you on a 14-day virtual cruise to our top destinations, giving you the lowdown on everything you can do. Whether you’re an outdoor adventurer, a history buff or a cocktail-enthusiast, we’ve got it covered. Today’s port of call is our new Winter 2016 destination, Dubai…
Rising from the burning sands of the Arabian Desert like a glass phoenix, Dubai is an ambitious feat of engineering and visionary construction. Whether you’ve got dune dreams, you’re a shopaholic or want to check out the architecture, a visit is a #ShoreThing with our new itineraries in Arabia and the Red Sea.
That’s right. Thomson Celebration is heading east for winter 2016. She’ll be sailing out of Dubai to exciting spots like Abu Dhabi and Khor Fakkan in the Emirates, Khasab and Muscat in Oman, Qatar’s Doha and Manama in Bahrain. Plus all the seven-night itineraries have an overnight call in Dubai.
To celebrate, we thought we’d share some of our favourite things to do in Dubai…
Make like Scheherazade and bring the story of one Arabian night to life under a canopy of stars in the desert sands. An evening 4WD desert excursion will take you deep into the dunes, where you’ll watch the sun sink into the waves as you capture epic sunset shots. After dinner at a Bedouin campsite where belly dancers perform around the campfire, opt for a camel ride, or simply take in the starlight. Head back into town where you’ll spy lines of camels backlit by the dazzling city skyline.
Beat the heat in the morning on a 4WD trip into the desert, where you’ll have the chance to go on a camel safari and glide down the golden slopes on skis or a board. Then romp around the dunes for a sandy rollercoaster ride and get a taste of dune bashing – a bone-rattling experience involving your vehicle ploughing through the sand like it’s doing a two-tonne belly flop.
Be escorted around the top spots of this sophisticated city. Cross Dubai Creek on remarkable bridges and admire the Jumeirah Mosque, Sheikh Mohammed’s Palace in Zabeel and the seven-star hotel of Burj Al Arab. Stop at bustling souks filled with fragrant spices, artisanal Arabic crafts and gold wares. Peek into the future of the city where new projects are in the works. Roll down the renowned Sheikh Zayed Road, which cuts through the heart of the city, parting the skyscrapers like a concrete and glass Red Sea.
Everywhere in Dubai, you can see the silvery spire of Burj Khalifa piercing the sky. Here’s your chance to ascend the world’s tallest building. Fly to the top in the fastest elevator on earth, which soars at 40mph and only takes a minute to reach the 124th floor, where stunning 360-degree views await you. Examine the world at your feet in vivid detail through the lens of a high-powered telescope. Enjoy sleek multimedia presentations that divulge the tower’s secrets, and add fun special effects to your selfies. Go up even further into the sky at the luxury lounge on the 148th floor.
Board one of the region’s traditional wooden sailing vessels to see the city from another vantage point as you cruise down Dubai Creek. After this illuminating tour, take advantage of Dubai’s incredibly diverse array of shopping options, ranging from lively souks to jaw-dropping megamalls. Stop at the Dubai Mall, the largest in the world by area, which has an aquarium and underwater zoo, ice rink, indoor theme park, and more than 120 restaurants and 1,200 shops. The Mall of the Emirates, which also boasts an indoor ski resort, is another top shopping destination in the city.
