Iberian folk dancers, Henna tattoos and Japanese pickled plums – it could only be the Destinations Holiday and Travel Show. We were there to scour the stands, taste all the samples and bring you the highlights…

Here at Thomson Towers we don’t need an excuse to research travel hotspots. Or an excuse to eat food. So we jumped at the chance to attend the Destinations Travel Show, in Kensington Olympia, where hundreds of exhibitors were offering holiday inspiration. Tour operators and leading travel writers were there to give expert advice on everything from adventure treks to luxury cruises. And countries were brought to life with colourful displays and cultural entertainment – including belly dancers, tea makers and Cuban musicians. Here’s what we got up to…

    Who was there…

Gryff Rhys Jones was chatting about Wales, and top travel writers were sharing stories of their epic trips and giving expert advice. We also attended a photography masterclass and then went to watch some flamenco dancing, a belly dance and a Karate display. All in the name of research.

    We ate…

Pastries, cured meats and many cubes of fudge. We tried Piri Piri cheese, Kudu Biltong from South Africa and Vietnamese Banh Mi – a baguette served with pulled pork and sweet spiced pickles.

    We drank…

Herbal honey tea from South East Asia and a selection of wines from Chile and the Czech Republic. Our favourite had to be the Czech Morovian wine which went down like a treat.

    Best stand…

It was a tough call, as every stand had something to offer. However Thailand pipped everyone to the post by recreating the stunning islands and beaches through the medium of cardboard. It certainly made us wish we were there.

Keep an eye on the Thomson blog for holiday inspiration
