Costa Rica plays a starring role in Bear Grylls’ Mission Survive, which launches tonight on ITV. If you fancy yourself as an adventurer – but definitely don’t fancy roughing it – then try one of our tours…
If you tune in to ITV tonight you’ll see eight celebrities join Bear Grylls in the Costa Rican rainforest ready for a 12-day survival mission. From Dame Kelly Holmes to actress Emilia Fox, the stars will have to battle to make it through in one piece – with the weakest being eliminated each week. If the setting for their antics inspires you to visit the rising star of the Central America, we’ve got three adventure tours that involve all of the sights and none of the sleeping rough. Which one will you pick?
Get back to nature without compromising on comfort with this tour, which packs heaps of adventures into 3 days. You’ll visit Ricon de la Vieja volcano and national park, exploring on foot and by horseback, before taking a dip in natural hot springs and dunking yourself in mud baths. There’ll be time for river tubing before zip-lining your way through Rio Blanco Canyon like a Thomson Tarzan. You’ll be staying at Hacienda Guachipelín, where ranch-style rooms come complete with hammocks on the veranda.
Packing in even more Instagram-worthy experiences, the highlight of the 4-night adventure has to be visiting Monteverde Cloud Forest. Before you get there, you’ll take a boat trip along the Rio Frio, relax at Tabacon hot spring and journey across Arenal Lake. Once you reach Monteverde – a mist-shrouded jungle high in the mountains – you’ll be able to zip-line through the canopy or walk across hanging bridges. You’ll split your evenings between Arenal Springs Hotel, with its jaw-slackening views of Arenal volcano, and Heliconia Hotel, with private balconies offering top sunset views.
This trip is long enough to showcase the very best of Costa Rica, taking you from the Pacific to Atlantic coasts with time to explore the eye-popping landscapes, flora and fauna found in between. You’ll start with a journey to Ricon de la Vieja volcano and national park before heading to Arenal, where you’ll go river tubing and horse riding. Then it’s on to Tabacon hot springs, for a rejuvenating dip, before taking a tour of Arenal’s hanging bridges. You’ll take a guided tour of the rainforest in Sarapiqui before venturing to Tortuguero, which is accessible only by boat. Cruise down mangrove-fringed waterways and visit the Green Turtle Museum and nearby beach, where turtles lay their eggs. Then it’s back to civilisation, with a visit to San Jose, the country’s bustling capital. Staying in small hotels and lodges, you’ll experience the real Costa Rica, but without it being a mission to survive.
