In honour of our favourite murder-mystery gal’s birthday today, we investigate the settings of some of Agatha Christie’s most famous tales…

Turkey – the scene of Murder on the Orient Express

The plot of this sinister story plays out aboard the world’s most famous train, as it chugs out of Istanbul bound for London. Make like Hercule and co. and track down some of the Turkish capital’s big-hitters like St Sophia, a magnificent church that rises above the Old City, the Topkapi Palace, and the Blue Mosque, with its impressive dome and 6 soaring minarets. And don’t miss the labyrinthine alleyways of the 14th-century Grand Bazaar – a rich tapestry of 4,000 shops selling everything from hand-woven rugs to embroidered slippers.

How to do it in style… Set sail aboard the Thomson Celebration on one of its Turkish itineraries. The 14-night Best of the Black Sea includes Istanbul among other exciting ports of call.

Egypt – the scene of Death on the Nile

Another Poirot classic, this novel sees the Belgian super-sleuth put his grey matter to the test along the banks of the Nile. Follow in the footsteps of the moustached detective and hunt out some of Egypt’s oldest must-sees. Potter around the Valley of the Kings, explore the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, and peer up at the gigantic Colossi of Memnon. Other Nile highlights include the Philae Temple and the temple at Denderah.

How to do it in style… A luxury adults-only ship that fictional frontman Poirot would approve of, the stylish Nile Legacy cruise boat certainly looks the part. It features panoramic windows that look over the Nile.
